Catalonia Un país conegut pel seu esperit competitiu Durant els últims 300 anys, Catalonia ha estat una regió singular d'Europa. Ni espanyola, ni francesa: catalana. La seva singularitat és evident per la llengua, tot i que és molt més real per la forma que té de plantejar-se el comerç, el desenvolupament econòmic, l'educació i la política. Catalonia va ser una de les primeres regions del món que va adoptar una metodologia enfocada a estimular la competitivitat en una zona geogràfica concreta, millorant l'estratègia i el context laboral de les seves empreses. Actualment, hi ha arguments econòmics i empresarials de pes per defensar la independència de Catalonia. Històricament, el desenvolupament de Califòrnia deu molt a Catalonia i a dos catalans, Juníper Serra i Gaspar de Portolà. El 16 de juliol de 1769, Serra va iniciar la seva primera missió a San Diego, abans de dur-ne a terme nou més tot resseguint la costa californiana fins a San Francisco. Gaspar de Portolà va néixer a Os de Balaguer (Lleida) l'any 1716, era soldat i va ser governador de Califòrnia.

The Symposium on the Current State and Prospects of Mathematics was held in Barcelona from June 13 to June 18, 1991. Seven invited Fields medalists gavetalks on the development of their respective research fields. The contents of all lectures were collected in the volume, together witha transcription of a round table discussion held during the Symposium. All papers are expository. Some parts include precise technical statements of recent results, but the greater part consists of narrative text addressed to a very broad mathematical public. CONTENTS: R. The news media have given us potent demonstrations of the ambiguity of ostensibly truthful representations of public events. Jordana Mendelson uses this ambiguity as a framework for the study of Spanish visual culture from 1929 to 1939--a decade marked, on the one hand, by dictatorship, civil war, and Franco's rise to power and, on the other, by a surge in the production of documentaries of various types, from films and photographs to international exhibitions. Mendelson begins with an examination of El Pueblo Español, a model Spanish village featured at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. She then discusses Buñuel's and Dalí's documentary films, relating them not only to French Surrealism but also to issues of rural tradition in the formation of regional and national identities. Her highly original book concludes with a discussion of the 1937 Spanish Pavilion, where Picasso's famed painting of the Fascist bombing of a Basque town--Guernica--was exhibited along with monumental photomurals by Josep Renau. Based upon years of archival research, Mendelson's book opens a new perspective on the cultural politics of a turbulent era in modern Spain. It explores the little-known yet rich intersection between avant-garde artists and government institutions. It shows as well the surprising extent to which Spanish modernity was fashioned through dialogue between the seemingly opposed fields of urban and rural, fine art, and mass culture.

THIS BOOK collects together papers given at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at Il Ciocco (Lucca), Italy, from the 9th to the 15th April, 1989. It sets out to present the current state of understanding of the principles governing the way fluxes and concentrations are maintained and controlled in metabolic systems. Although this is a topic that has held the interest of biochemists for many years, it is only quite recently that the methods of analysing the kinetics of multi-enzyme pathways developed over the past two decades have come to be widely discussed or applied experimentally. Many biochemists remain sceptical that the new methods offer a real advance (except in complexity) over the landmark discoveries of the 1950s and 1960s relating to inhibition of enzymes at branch-points by the end products of metabolic pathways, and the interpretation of allosteric effects and cooperativity. Even those who have become convinced that the classical ideas provide only the starting point for understanding metabolic control have been by no means unanimous in their assess ment of the direction in which one should advance. In this book we have tried to include all of the current points of view, including the view that the classical theories tell us all that we need to know. We have not seen it as our role as editors to paper over the cracks that exist and to pretend that we can speak to the world with one voice.

This work presents the state-of-the-art in numerical and analytical techniques as well as future trends associated with "mission design" for libration point orbits. It contains papers explaining theoretical developments and their applications, including the accurate description of some actual libration point missions of ESA and NASA. The existing software in the field and some applications beyond the neighbourhood of the Earth are also presented. Special emphasis is placed on the use of dynamical system methodology in the libration-point-orbits mission design.
