The people are of several different races including Humans, Dwarves, Erebans, and some others. A group of seven young people who have never met each other before are assembled by Sarah Swift to search for her father, Robert Swift, who has not returned from an expedition to deliver furniture that he is selling in various parts of the island. The group encounters several unexpected situations as they go to places that they have never been before. They get to know each other and cooperate to try to achieve their objectives.

After Hitler annexed Austria in 1938, the Gestapo began silencing critics. Many were shipped to concentration camps; those deemed most dangerous to the Reich were executed. Yet a few slipped through the Gestapo's net and organized resistance cells. One group, codenamed CASSIA, became America's most effective spy ring in Austria during World War II.
