Synopsis California Waves: the Davenports, Book 2 by : Bella Andre
Meet the Davenport family! Six brothers and sisters who call picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea home. Successful, brilliant, and passionate, the only thing they all still need is the perfect partner in love and life. When Herschel Greenfield achieved his dream of becoming an astronaut and going on space missions, he thought he knew the risks—but he never expected his splashdown would go wrong and he’d nearly drown. He tells everyone he’s fine, but if that’s true, then why can’t get into the ocean? Somehow, some way, he needs to conquer his fear so that he can continue going into space. When pro-surfer Mila Davenport suffered a career-ending accident that almost cost her life, she had to adjust to an entirely new life where she spent more time on land than in the sea. While she loves her new career as a realtor, nothing makes her feel more alive than riding the waves. Certainly, no man has ever come close to giving her that same rush that the ocean does. But after meeting Herschel, when she learns about his emotional fallout from his crash landing, she wants nothing more than to help him learn to love the sea as much as she does, despite his harrowing experience. The only problem is that she also thinks he’s incredibly sexy and can’t help but want him. More than she’s ever wanted anyone. And when it seems like he feels the same way about her, that’s when things suddenly feel truly dangerous. Far more dangerous than any surfing accident or crash landing. Because this time around, Mila isn’t just risking her body—she’s risking her heart. But is Hersch willing to risk his heart, too? Or once he gets over his issues with the sea, will he be on the next spaceship out of town…and she’ll be left with nothing but the memories of being with the most incredible man she’s ever known? But it gets harder and harder every day as she starts to fall for him—and for his amazing family—even though she knows she’ll have to leave him for her next client as soon as he’s fully recovered. Arch, however, has no plans to let Tessa disappear once his leg is fully recovered. Synopsis Stars Shine In Your Eyes (London Sullivans 2) by : Bella Andre
"Loved it, Loved it, Loved it! Long live the London Sullivans!" 5 stars According to the British gossip columns, billionaire Malcolm Sullivan is one of the most eligible bachelors in England. His siblings love to tease him about that, and since he also thinks the whole thing is ridiculous, he takes no offense. The irony is that while he is great at his job, he's terrible at dating...let alone falling in love. In fact, he's been told during nearly every single break-up that as long as he stays wed to his high-powered job, he will never find true love. Josie Hartwell is thrilled about her new contract job working with bookstore owner Mari Everett to set up a reading retreat on Elderflower Island. However, she's shocked to realize that she will not only be working closely with Malcolm Sullivan on the project, but that she'll also be staying in his houseboat on the Thames. For more than a decade, she's worked to forget about Malcolm, who had been an exchange student at her high school in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Like everyone else, she'd had a secret crush on him. Unlike everyone else, however, it was only her heart that he'd crushed. Now that they're unexpectedly reunited, as they spend more and more time together, the sizzling heat between them becomes hotter than anything either of them have felt with anyone else. But do they have any chance of a lasting love? Can Josie risk her heart on the man who smashed it into a million pieces? Can she trust him to get it right this time? Or should she walk out of his life, the same way he once walked out of hers? Synopsis Finding Bix by : Brendan Wolfe
Bix Beiderbecke was one of the first great legends of jazz. Among the most innovative cornet soloists of the 1920s and the first important white player, he invented the jazz ballad and pointed the way to “cool” jazz. But his recording career lasted just six years; he drank himself to death in 1931—at the age of twenty-eight. It was this meteoric rise and fall, combined with the searing originality of his playing and the mystery of his character—who was Bix? not even his friends or family seemed to know—that inspired subsequent generations to imitate him, worship him, and write about him. It also provoked Brendan Wolfe’s Finding Bix a personal and often surprising attempt to connect music, history, and legend. A native of Beiderbecke’s hometown of Davenport, Iowa, Wolfe grew up seeing Bix’s iconic portrait on everything from posters to parking garages. He never heard his music, though, until cast to play a bit part in an Italian biopic filmed in Davenport. Then, after writing a newspaper review of a book about Beiderbecke, Wolfe unexpectedly received a letter from the late musician's nephew scolding him for getting a number of facts wrong. This is where Finding Bix begins: in Wolfe's good-faith attempt to get the facts right. What follows, though, is anything but straightforward, as Wolfe discovers Bix Beiderbecke to be at the heart of furious and ever-timely disputes over addiction, race and the origins of jazz, sex, and the influence of commerce on art. He also uncovers proof that the only newspaper interview Bix gave in his lifetime was a fraud, almost entirely plagiarized from several different sources. In fact, Wolfe comes to realize that the closer he seems to get to Bix, the more the legend retreats.

Synopsis Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water by : E. R. Johnson
The special case of horizontal wave forces on large vertical cylinders in deep water is considered. The typical application for such a case is the calculation of horizontal forces on column-stabilized floating ocean platforms. Existing literature discussing horizontal wave forces on cylinders does not generally agree on how to predict these forces. Since for large-diameter cylinders in deep water the maximum force is completely inertial, the problem of deriving a solution is considerably simplified. In this study, an expression for the maximum horizontal wave force on large-diameter circular cylinders mounted vertically in deep water has been analytically derived. Experimental model studies were also conducted and the resulting measured forces are compared to predicted forces. An example of how to predict horizontal wave forces using the methods of the report is given. (Author).

Synopsis Frank Norris by : Joseph R. McElrath
Born in Chicago in 1870, Frank Norris led a life of adventure and art. He moved to San Francisco at fifteen, spent two years in Paris painting, and returned to San Francisco to become an internationally famous author. He died at age thirty-two from a ruptured appendix. During his short life, he wrote an inspired series of novels about the United States coming of age. The Octopus was a prescient warning about the threat of monopolies, and The Pit exposed the intrigues and dirty dealings at the Chicago grain exchange. Extensively reprinted, Norris's works have also found their way into popular consciousness through film (Erich von Stroheim's Greed), and even an opera based on his portrait of the huge, dumb, and murderous dentist, McTeague.Interest in this dynamic writer was wide and sustained, but Frank Norris and his family did biographers no favours. Norris burned most of his correspondence, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire devoured more, and his brother and widow dispersed his surviving papers as gifts. As a result, it was thought impossible to assemble enough material to surpass the single existing biography, published in 1932. Authors Joseph R. McElrath Jr. and Jesse S. Crisler, acknowledged as the leading experts on Norris, have spent have spent over thirty years overcoming these obstacles, devotedly amassing the material necessary to at last fashion a truly full-scale portrait of the artist. Anyone familiar with the breezier existing accounts of the man and hungering for the real story will agree that Frank Norris, A Life was worth the wait.

Synopsis Analysis of Controlled Terrestrial Photographs Taken at Davenport, California for Wave Velocity Method of Depth Determination by : Francis H. Moffitt
Wave photographs were taken from a ground position about 90 ft above the sea level with an F-56 aerial camaera using an 8 1/4-in. lens pointed essentially parrallel to the wave crests and roughly normal to a pier which extended outward from shore to a distance of about 2200 ft. An electrically driven timer reading directly to 0.1 sec, capable of being estimated to 0.01 sec, was located in the foreground of the field of view of the aerial camera. The exposure interval varied from about 2 sec to about 4 sec with the comera operated altogether manually. The photographs taken with the F-56 aerial camera were arranged in sequence according to time and wave groups. Three different methods for determining wave lengths and wave periods were used. Similar wave photographs were taken a second time. The most difficult of all measurements was identification of the position of wave crests on the photographs. The investigation indicated that waves of a suitable nature (long period, fairly regular waves) give satisfactorily bottom profiles out to depths as much as 30 ft. The reliability increased as the number of waves measured increased.
