By 1810, Napoleon reigned supreme over most of continental Europe. But the Iberian Peninsula remained unsubdued, particularly Portugal, which continued to resist. Napoleon ordered Marshal Masséna to crush this resistance with the Army of Portugal. Greatly strengthened, Masséna's army would drive the Portuguese and British into the sea. Facing the French were 60,000 British and Portuguese troops. No-one knew how the Portuguese would perform in battle, but on 27 September 1810, they received their baptism of fire. This title details the gruelling Bussaco campaign as French attempts to subdue Portugal reached their climax.

Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life’s work “The History of the British Army”, issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. This seventh volume covers the period from 1809-1810, after a disastrous raid into French held Holland, the British government decided to use all their power to the strike at Napoleon at his weakest point, Portugal and Spain. After the British foray into Spain in 1809 culminating the bloody victory at Talavera, the British troops retreated into Portugal before the overwhelming French numbers. Inflicting a punishing check to the French invasion force under Masséna at Bussaco, the British army marched to the massive and impenetrable lines of Torres Vedras close to Lisbon. History of Rifle Brigade from 1809 to 1813 - mainly Peninsular War in which the regiment was involved from start to finish. On 10th May 1809 the strength of the 1st Battalion was 1,536 and the 2nd 1,579 and so a 3rd Battalion was formed. The unfortunate 2nd Battalion was involved in the Walcheren expedition August to December 1809 and when our troops evacuated the place battle deaths had amounted to 111, deaths from disease numbered over 4,000. But the main subject in this volume is the Peninsular War in which the regiment played a very active part from beginning to end. All three battalions were involved and seventeen Battle Honours were awarded, the highest number for any regiment in that campaign. The descriptions of operations are in detail, supported by superb maps.
