Synopsis Bridges a Study in Their Art, Science and Evolution (Classic Reprint) by : Charles S. Whitney

Excerpt from Bridges a Study in Their Art, Science and Evolution The purpose of this book is threefold. First: to give a method for the application of funda mental architectural principles to the design and criticism of bridges; to point out that the modern bridge should not, as is sometimes stated, be exempted from the same rules of art that apply to other architectural works; and to make a plea for thorough architectural train ing of the Civil Engineer that his tremendously important works may be as inspiringly beau tiful as they are economically sound. Second: to present the historical background of the Modern Bridge, showing how bridge building developed from the earliest time to the present day; how it has been influenced by social, political, and economic conditions; and picturing the most beautiful and interesting bridges of each period. Third: to present a selection of photographs of artistic bridges of all types; which it is hoped will not only interest the layman but will furnish valuable inspiration to engineers and architects who are engaged in designing bridges. Not all of the designs pictured are to be considered as perfect, but they all have enough artistic merit to make their study worth while, and they show how their designers have solved the special problems involved. Synopsis Methods and Causes of Evolution (Classic Reprint) by : Orator Fuller Cook

Excerpt from Methods and Causes of Evolution Evolution is the branch of science concerned with the study of organic change. That species are subject to change is a fact as general and as fundamental in the organic world as gravitation is in the inorganic, and no less important in its relations to human progress. Our knowledge of evolution is far from complete, but it affords our only insight into many important problems. Synopsis The Evolution of Life, Or Causes of Change in Animal Forms by : Hubbard Winslow Mitchell

Excerpt from The Evolution of Life, or Causes of Change in Animal Forms: A Study in Biology The great question of The Evolution of Life upon the earth, and the causes that have led to the successive changes in animal forms, is one that should be treated from an anatomical and a physiological point of view. Scientists have hitherto spoken of these changes that have taken place, and have concurred in the opinion that the lower forms of life have advanced in the scale of development, and in time have given rise to higher and newer forms. It is believed and generally accepted that the protoplasmic cell was the first vital organism that appeared upon the earth - that, following this in order came the protozoans, the fishes, the reptiles, the marsupials, the mammals, the higher apes, and finally man, but no attempt has ever been made, as far as I know, to explain the physiological causes of these changes in the anatomy of the animal kingdom. It is only a part of the truth to say that a reptile was evolved from a fish, a mammal from a reptile, and man from the higher apes. But this is not enough. The world is advancing to that point when it demands to know [1010 these changes took place, by what physi ological process they occurred, and what was the reason that induced them to change. It is this great point that I have endeavored to explain, - how far, and how well I have succeeded, I leave others to judge. If any thing is left unsaid or unexplained it may serve as a stimulus to future writers to finish the work I have planned out. I have written this work from a physi. Synopsis Evolution, from a Scientific Standpoint (Classic Reprint) by : John Pope Stewart

Excerpt from Evolution, From a Scientific Standpoint Evolution tells us that the world at one time was a ball of burning matter, sputtering and sparkling like the white, hot iron from the blacksmith's forge, flung at random from some greater body, possibly the sun, into limitless space to wander where it listeth. After wander ing about for a few millions of years, it gets into a certain beaten path, which it has since ever faithfully followed, and now it begins to cool down. This cooling process has gone (and is still going) until at the present time we have a crust on the surface Of this fire ball estimated at feet.
