Finally, a concise pocket guide designed as a quick reference for busy clinicians who seek to improve the care they provide to cancer patients and cancer survivors. It is a comprehensive text formatted for fast access to a wide range of clinical information. This compact compendium is conveniently organized by cancer type for rapid review. It describes the many issues that cancer patients may face throughout the chronologic spectrum of care, starting from cancer diagnosis, to treatment, and survivorship. Each chapter helpfully highlights common impairments and treatment options using succinct tables, helpful illustrations and clinical peals from experts in the field. In addition, each chapter contains a clinical case and questions on the material to enhance understanding. Evidence for exercise treatment, including pertinent exercise precautions, is included, as are innovative research topics and emerging treatments. This includes dedicated chapters covering cancers of the breast; digestive organs; brain, eye, and central nervous system; urinary tract and genital organs; lip, oral cavity, and pharynx; lymphoid, hematopoietic, and related tissues; bone, articular cartilage, and soft tissues; respiratory and intrathoracic organs; skin. Thankfully, advances in cancer care such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery mean that more people than ever before are surviving long after their cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, a large fraction of them live with at least one serious impairment as a consequence of their treatments that seriously impacts their ability to function and quality of life. This concise and essential guide to cancer rehabilitation will help the clinician navigate the care of this often complex population.

Synopsis 05 - THE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE - A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY ON CANCER REHABILITATION NEEDS, SOCIAL STIGMA AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN WOMEN WITH CANCER by : Jeanette Kittang
THE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE - A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY ON CANCER REHABILITATION NEEDS, SOCIAL STIGMA AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN WOMEN WITH CANCERJeanette Kittang1, Emma Ohlsson-Nevo21Faculty of Medicine and Health, u00d6rebro University, Department of Oncology, u00d6rebro University Hospital, u00d6rebro, Sweden.2 Faculty of Medicine and Health, u00d6rebro University, University Health Care Research Center, u00d6rebro, Sweden.BackgroundMore than 30.000 women in Sweden receive a cancer diagnosis every year and 11.000 of these women suffer from gynecological cancer or breast cancer. Early rehabilitation intervention is an effective way to support female cancer patients in improving their quality of life.Feminist theory states that society today has a male-centered definition of science because historically, knowledge has been based on the experience of privileged, white men and thereby excluding less privileged groups. MethodIn 2017, postal questionnaires were sent out to 521 women diagnosed with cancer. Main research variables were cancer rehabilitation needs based on types of cancer, age and education. Other variables were social stigma and health related quality of life. The aim of the study was to describe cancer rehabilitation needs, social stigma and quality of life in women with cancer in general and women with gynecological cancer and breast cancer in specific.ResultsThe final sample consists of 315 women, which gives a response rate of 60%. The most wanted cancer rehabilitation for the entire cohort was Information and supportive groups with people with the same diagnosis (39%), and the second most wanted was Individual weight training (33%). When the 16 listed rehabilitation needs were grouped into 10 groups, complexity showed that 30% of the women wanted no cancer rehabilitation intervention. 50% of the women wanted more than one rehabilitation intervention. 11% of the women wanted five different rehabilitation interventions. ConclusionThe result shows that there is a great need of cancer rehabilitation interventions among these women. It is notable how similar the groups are when based on type of cancer or age, this implies that a nurse needs to see the individual needs in every patient and not let the primary understanding be based on patient characteristics. Synopsis Reclaiming Our Lives After Breast and Gynecologic Cancer by : Kristine L. Falco
Written by a clinician who specializes in medical psychology and who herself has had breast cancer, twice, this is an unusually aware and supportive book that recognizes and addresses cancer's assault on one's senses of self, femininity, and womanhood. It speaks with equal resonance to women with (or worried about) cancer and to those who love them, as well as to the professionals in mental, physical, and spiritual health who work with them. Kristine Falco leavens the hard parts with her unshakable assurance that the experience of cancer can lead to a 'choiceful, redecided life based on new and amended definitions of womanhood and humanness.' She shares her understanding of the physiology of gynecologic and breast cancers, and knowledgeably confronts the differential challenges of surviving both the diagnosis and the treatments.
