Synopsis Preventing Bullying Through Science, Policy, and Practice by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Bullying has long been tolerated as a rite of passage among children and adolescents. There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Synopsis What Teachers Need to Know by : Matthew Bruce Etherington
Every generation has sought to make teaching and learning more inclusive and equitable, but pesky questions always remain, such as, how can teaching and learning be conducted in ways that satisfies and respects everyone? What are the parameters of an inclusive pedagogy? Who defines its principles? How should these principles be taught and by whom? And by what authority shall they be grounded? These types of thorny questions occupy the essence of educators and the authors of this book. This book is about teachers, educators, and topics related to inclusion. Teachers and educators have a lot to know, therefore the topics are broad and relevant to the times. What should teachers know about special needs, religion and spirituality, Aboriginality, the environment, tolerance, and school choice? Although teachers have knowledge of their subject matter, knowledge alone is not sufficient. They must know and understand how people learn. A teacher must also care deeply about who they teach. And this "teacher knowledge" grows and changes over time as teachers become more experienced, informed, skilled, and wiser. At the same time no teacher preparation will be sufficient because there will always be discussions that were never had and knowledge that was never shared. Time has its costs and there is only so much a formal education can prepare someone. This book helps to satisfy a cavity in learning for teachers and educators in general.

Synopsis The Bullying Phenomenon by : Dwayne Ruffin Ed.D
Student bullying exists as an egregious, insidious, and antisocial behavior that traumatizes millions of students each year. Bullying is a widespread problem that has its greatest impact and prevalence during middle school and high school years. The effects of bullying are well documented and include negative impacts on student development and academic achievement. Bullying consequently causes psychological harm as well as a lack of normative social interactions and maladaptive outcomes for children who engage in bullying. As an effective intervention, the author developed the Bullying Resolution Model. The Bullying Resolution Model is solution driven. The model components consist of five core-driving forces embedded within the bullying cycle, purposefully designed to achieve a resolution. Primarily, the bullying resolution model is dynamic in nature. The Bullying Resolution Model attribute is based on the premise of reaching a resolution by means of vigorous activity through acquiring social and emotional competency interaction skills. The synergistic feature of the model guides the facilitator through the resolution process for maximum effectiveness. Consequently, the bullying model components can address multilevel conflicts ranging from minor inappropriateness to sever or even complex dilemmas. Giving much-needed support and interventions to the facilitator in confronting the apparent bully or bullies, monitor setbacks, and progress to resolution of the conflicted parties.

Synopsis Children's Rights by : Anne B. Smith
A marked change in traditional thinking about children and childhood was promoted by the adoption by the United Nations (in 1989) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the early 90s sociologists in the United States and the UK developed Childhood Studies to promote a holistic view of children's lives, recognition of their competence and agency, and the impact and value of their everyday experiences. As a result of this impetus, different thinking has emerged about the role and recognition of children, the institutions of childhood, and the way we view and treat children in modern societies. This book focuses on research emerging from Children's Rights and Childhood Studies thinking, which has important implications for developing policies and practices to improve children's well being and rights. The author presents the implications of children's rights for six contexts of children's everyday lives: families; early childhood education; schooling; child protection services; health services; and employment.
