Synopsis The 100 Greatest Baseball Games of the 20th Century Ranked by : Joseph J. Dittmar
More than 150,000 major league baseball games were played in the 20th century. Here are ranked the 100 greatest, the very best (less than 1/10th of 1 percent) of the contests. They feature brilliant individual pitching performances, pitching duels, remarkable individual batting achievements, team offensive explosions, mind-numbing comebacks, multiple lead changes, team rivalries and heroics in final at-bats. The games are from the regular season, pennant races, playoffs, and the World Series. The inclusion of some games might be surprising, but all of them twanged or hammered the nerves of both spectators and participants.

Synopsis The 100 Greatest Days in New York Sports by : Stuart Miller
New York City sports history, like the city itself, is noisy, confident, and endlessly fascinating. This is the city where Joe Louis struck a blow against the Nazis, where major league baseball was integrated, and where marathons and professional tennis came into their own. The 100 Greatest Days in New York Sports, Updated Edition, recounts New York’s greatest sporting moments, from Jackie Robinson integrating baseball to the Ali-Frazier fight to the New York Giants stunning the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. It covers dramatic sporting events involving the likes of Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, Serena Williams, Reggie Jackson, Dr. J, Joe Namath, and many more. This updated edition features a new, chronological approach to highlight the remarkable history and development of sports in the city and the nation. It also includes many new moments, an updated ranking, and a single list that incorporates events that took place outside the city but involved New York teams. Pick a sport—baseball, football, basketball, boxing, tennis—and in every case New York has had front-row seats for the sport’s major developments and most memorable events. The 100 Greatest Days in New York Sports illuminates how important sports are to the life of New York and the city’s preeminent place in American sports history. It’s about all the “firsts” that occurred here, the many titles that have been won, and all the drama in between.

A project of SABR's Nineteenth Century Committee, INVENTING BASEBALL brings to life the greatest games to be played in the game's early years. Synopsis 6.4.76 Phoenix Suns Vs. Boston Celtics by : Roger Gordon
What makes a great basketball game? Talented players. Great shots. Amazing passes. Slick moves. Tremendous hustle. A large lead. A fantastic comeback. An overtime period. Another overtime period. Yet another overtime period. A sellout crowd in a celebrated arena. Fans rushing the court. One of those fans attacking an official. A National Basketball Association game between the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics 45 years ago had all of those things and more. This is the story of what is widely regarded as “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” Game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals. In 1996, Classic Sports Network (now ESPN Classic) polled NBA writers, and they voted the contest as the greatest single game in the then 50-year history of the league. Played exactly one month before the nation’s bicentennial celebration, the game began just after 9 p.m. on Friday night, June 4, but due to its length, spilled over into Saturday, June 5. It was played in the historic Boston Garden before a crowd of 15,320. The Celtics won 128-126 in triple overtime. There were so many twists and turns during the game. The Celtics had greats like John Havlicek, Dave Cowens, Jo White, and ex-Sun Charlie Scott. The Suns were led by Gar Heard, Paul Westphal, and Rookie of the Year Alvan Adams. There were many thrilling NBA games prior to June 4, 1976, and there have been many since, but I believe this Phoenix-Boston classic will continue to stand the test of time as “The Greatest Game Ever Played.”
