Synopsis Born in the Life: Gene Borrello by : Louis Romano

Newly edited and revamped edition of this True Crime Story: What does a real-life Mafia enforcer actually do on a day-to-day basis? Born in the Life illustrates Gene Borrello's profound treachery in the Bonanno crime family and the penalties he was forced to live with. Gene Borrello's story is not something that everyone has already heard or read about or has seen on various documentaries and dramatic cable shows on the history of the Mafia. Borrello's story is current day, not something from the days of Bugsy Siegel, Albert Anastasia, and Mayer Lansky or a Mario Puzzo compilation of the old days. The Borrello saga is about a thirty-six-year-old mob enforcer who was born into the life with the true nitty gritty, unglamorous street life that led to his being locked up for a third of his life until he finally said... enough.

Synopsis Vinny Gorgeous by : Anthony M. DeStefano

A vain man of good looks but no family ties to the Mob, Vincent “Vinny Gorgeous” Basciano worked his way up to acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, becoming its leader when official boss Joseph Massino went to prison in 2003. When the Mafia was crawling with secret operatives and informants caving to government pressure to flip, Basciano steadfastly obeyed the code of La Cosa Nostra. “I got faith in one guy,” he said during a secretly taped meeting. That man was Massino, head of the Bonanno borgata. But for all his loyalty, Basciano was still a hot-headed, cold-blooded killer, which ultimately led to his arrest and downfall. Then in a remarkable betrayal that rocked the Five Families to their foundations, Massino secretly cooperated with the FBI—the first head bossever to roll over. As a result, Basciano faced the death penalty, but a federal jury, disturbed by the prosecution’s use of deadly criminal informants, reached a surprising verdict. Here from veteran crime author Anthony M. DeStefano comes the riveting story of the last true believer in the Mob’s cult of brotherhood and his betrayal at the hands of the only man he ever trusted.

Synopsis Nelson Mandela by : Kem Knapp Sawyer

On February 11, 1990, South Africa's Nelson Mandela walked free after spending twenty-seven and a half years in prison-more than a third of his adult life. A delirious throng of well-wishers, numbering more than 100,000, greeted him in Cape Town with chants of "Viva Mandela," to which Mandela responded with a clenched-fist salute and an address that began with thanks to "friends, comrades, and fellow South Africans" for their "tireless and heroic sacrifices." Ordinary black South Africans had not heard the voice of their anti-apartheid hero, or even seen what he looked like, in a generation. Release of "the prisoner of the century" captured headlines around the world. The seventy-one-year-old Mandela had been sentenced to life in prison on June 12, 1964, for conspiracy to overthrow the government of South Africa and its policies of white supremacy, known as apartheid. In apartheid South Africa, blacks had no rights: they could not vote, own land, move freely from one place to another, or live in "white" areas; and black children attended schools grossly inferior to those for whites. Initially, Mandela had tried peaceful means to attain equal rights for South Africa's black majority, advocating civil resistance, speaking out, organizing strikes and rallies. However, when the government did not reform, but responded with violence by killing women and children, Mandela and other leading activists turned to armed struggle, carrying out sabotage against non-human targets such as power stations arid government buildings. This was all a far cry from Mandela's humble beginnings as a herdboy in a small village. As a boy, he was often not sure of himself. He cared little for the outside world and rarely challenged authority. But when he grew up, Mandela bravely devoted his life to the cherished ideal of "d democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities." Four years after Mandela's release from prison, that cherished ideal began to fake shape, when he became the first president of a democratic South Africa, serving as a symbol of peace, unity, and change, even in the face of enormously difficult social and economic challenges. A democratic South Africa is one of the twentieth century's greatest achievements, and its native son. Nelson Mandela, is one of the world's most beloved statesmen. Book jacket.

Synopsis The Enforcer by : Adrian Humphreys

Shortly after lunch on May 31, 1997, Johnny Papalia-also known as Johnny Pops, Canada's Capone, Godfather or The Enforcer-was gunned down outside his office at 10 Railway Street in Hamilton, Ontario. For close to forty years, gangsters across Canada had bowed to the fearsome will of Johnny Pops Papalia, a Mafia chieftain who grew up in a working-class ghetto and rose to hold a tenuous grip on organized crime. Journalist Adrian Humphreys followed the life, business and influence of Papalia, and using an intriguing selection of sources-from gangsters and street rogues to police and honest citizens-he recreates that shadowy world and reveals a man who could be as brutal as he was generous. The Enforcer takes the reader inside the Mafia's inner sanctum and reveals the power this organization still wields.
