New Bon promises to become an important focus of interest among academic Tibetologists in the coming years. This unique, first-ever English-language volume on Tibet’s New Bon religion (14th century onwards) contains the full catalogue of the collected rediscovered teachings revealed by bDe chen gling pa, an important Bon po master of the second part of the 19th century in Eastern Tibet. Belonging to a later period of development within the various lineages of New Bon, bDe chen gling stands as an essential link between this tradition and that of the Ris med movement of the late 19th century. The annotated catalogue of the thirteen volume collection mostly covers tantric and rDzogs chen (Great Perfection) texts barely known outside native libraries.

This book, the first of its kind to be dedicated solely to the art of Bon religion and culture, which to this day has been overshadowed by its Buddhist counterpart, aims to explore and reveal the many hidden treasures of this so far overlooked religion. Engaging with the great scholars of the field, in particular the revered Samten G. Karmay, the reader is invited to delve into the depths of this wonderful culture. Jeff Watt, curator of the Rubin Museum of Art, enlightens the reader by differentiating between Bon and Buddhist art, which it are so often confused. The other contributors look at specific topics within Bon, including its paintings, sacred geography and its founding and therefore set the beautiful art and artifacts within their context. The purpose of this book is to inspire, and in the process to enable the reader to appreciate the beauty of Bon art while simultaneously gaining an understanding of the ethos of Bon, from the time of its founding through to the more than one million practicing Bonpo of today.

The subject for this study, the Tibetan “treasure revealer” Gshen-chen Klu-dga’, is a crucial figure in the development of Bon as an organised religion after the eleventh century. Here for the first time he is situated in the context of what was happening in Buddhism at the time. By scrutinizing his life and gter-ma (“treasures”), that were to be of much controversy in later ages, Dan Martin sheds light on the mechanism of Tibetan polemical tradition and the ways in which sectarianism accords itself legitimacy by resurrecting ancient arguments in a subtly distorted manner. The exhaustive annotated bibliography of previous works about Bon, forming the second part of the work, can rightly be seen as a legacy of Gshen-chen. Both parts taken together make this an indispensable guide to any student of Bon.

The Treasure tradition of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism posits that in the eighth century, various adepts hid spiritual instructions (gter ma, lit. “Treasures”) for the purpose of future discovery at auspicious times. Tibetan Treasure Literature discusses central themes and personalities in the history and practice of this tradition. It presents the first thorough survey of the revelations of the great visionary master Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa (1829–1870), including translations of selected texts with detailed commentary by Khenpo Rinchen Namgyal, one of Chokgyur Lingpa’s foremost students. Also included is a discussion of the criteria for evaluating the authenticity of those beings who claim to have revealed such Treasures of Buddhist teaching, by the renowned master Ju Mipham (1846–1912).

A stereogram is a two-dimensional image that, when viewed properly, creates a stunning, almost magical impression of depth. Objects seem to float or to pop out of patterns. And these complex and sophisticated designs, produced by two of the most famous stereogram creators in the world, are state of the art.

A study of Tibetan religion. To practising bonpos, Bon simply means the true religion of Tibet, while to Tibetan Buddhists, Bon refers to the false teachings and practices that were prevalent before Buddhism became the dominant religion under the Kings. The present study resulted from a period during which the author was engaged in intense contact with practising bonpos. Ritual has been long viewed as an undisputed and indisputable part of (especially religious) tradition, performed over and over in the same ways: stable in form, meaningless, preconcieved, and with the aim of creating harmony and enabling a tradition's survival. The authors represented in this collection argue, however, that this view can be seriously challenged and that ritual's embeddedness in negotiation processes is one of its central features.

First published in 1989. This book includes the Tibetan Buddhist hagiography and concentrates on the lives of Pemalingpa (1450-1521) and the Sixth Dalai Lama (1683-1706). One of the main purposes of this study is to communicate the human qualities of these saints to a rather broader audience.
