Synopsis Bombay Talkies by : Mayank Shekhar
A reason this movie annual, chronicling Mumbai cinema during 2004 and 2005, exists is fairly similar to why film reviews do. At a basic level, movie reviews are manuals to the movies. The reason they appear in mainline publications across the globe and ought to, often at the inevitable cost of rubbing many the wrong way, is that they are one of the best-read, accessible and possibly the only honest space to discuss the most mass-oriented pop-cultural product.

Synopsis Bombay Hustle by : Debashree Mukherjee
From starry-eyed fans with dreams of fame to cotton entrepreneurs turned movie moguls, the Bombay film industry has historically energized a range of practices and practitioners, playing a crucial and compelling role in the life of modern India. Bombay Hustle presents an ambitious history of Indian cinema as a history of material practice, bringing new insights to studies of media, modernity, and the late colonial city. Drawing on original archival research and an innovative transdisciplinary approach, Debashree Mukherjee offers a panoramic portrait of the consolidation of the Bombay film industry during the talkie transition of the 1920s–1940s. In the decades leading up to independence in 1947, Bombay became synonymous with marketplace thrills, industrial strikes, and modernist experimentation. Its burgeoning film industry embodied Bombay’s spirit of “hustle,” gathering together and spewing out the many different energies and emotions that characterized the city. Bombay Hustle examines diverse sites of film production—finance, pre-production paperwork, casting, screenwriting, acting, stunts—to show how speculative excitement jostled against desires for scientific management in an industry premised on the struggle between contingency and control. Mukherjee develops the concept of a “cine-ecology” in order to examine the bodies, technologies, and environments that collectively shaped the production and circulation of cinematic meaning in this time. The book thus brings into view a range of marginalized film workers, their labor and experiences; forgotten film studios, their technical practices and aesthetic visions; and overlooked connections among media practices, geographical particularities, and historical exigencies.

Synopsis Hero Vol.1 by : Ashok Raj
This volume traces the growth of the indigenous Hindi film hero from the silent era up to Dilip Kumar. The film hero is depicted as a credible representative of the social, cultural and political milieu of his era. The author contends that the development of Hindi cinema has been largely centered round the frontal figure of the hero. In the course of the narrative, the subject matter presents a compact history of mainstream Hindi cinema by placing personalities, events and trends in specific time frames.

Synopsis Bollywood Cinema by : Vijay Mishra
India is home to Bollywood - the largest film industry in the world. Movie theaters are said to be the "temples of modern India," with Bombay producing nearly 800 films per year that are viewed by roughly 11 million people per day. In Bollywood Cinema, Vijay Mishra argues that Indian film production and reception is shaped by the desire for national community and a pan-Indian popular culture. Seeking to understand Bollywood according to its own narrative and aesthetic principles and in relation to a global film industry, he views Indian cinema through the dual methodologies of postcolonial studies and film theory. Mishra discusses classics such as Mother India (1957) and Devdas (1935) and recent films including Ram Lakhan (1989) and Khalnayak (1993), linking their form and content to broader issues of national identity, epic tradition, popular culture, history, and the implications of diaspora.

Synopsis The Thespian by : Urmila Lanba
Known variously as the last emperor in the Indian film world, a living legend, the thespian, few would contest that Dilip Kumar has been a dominant figure for over five decades in an industry where actors spring up like mushrooms and are wiped out quickly. This book attempts to flesh out the person behind the star and how Kumar's cultured dignity and grace have given him a credibility which transcends the silver screen, making him a public figure who is both widely admired and respected. The book also contains his complete filmography and an array of photographs that chronicle his life and films. Lovingly and film-by-film, this book traces Dilip Kumar’s legendary career which started by pure chance when he was barely twenty-two and with no interest in films to speak of. Dilip Kumar achieved his undisputed status as India’s outstanding film actor through sheer hard work and astonishing dedication. Acting in only fifty-four films in nearly as many years, Dilip helped create landmark films from the 1940s to the 1980s, including Shaheed, Jogan, Devdas, Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Gunga Jumna, Sagina Mahato and Shakti, to name a few. Intensely interested in all aspects of the films he worked in, Dilip also directed several of them. Dilip Kumar is a very private man in a very public industry. Thus, while so much has been written about him in the media there remains an aura of mystery about him. This book attempts to flesh out the person behind the star and how Dilip Kumar’s cultured dignity and grace have given him a credibility which transcends the silver screen, making him a public figure who is both widely admired and respected. The book also contains a complete filmography of Dilip Kumar and an array of photographs that chronicle his life and films.

Synopsis You Ask, I Tell by : Hansa Wadkar
The rise to stardom and tragic fall of one of the heroines of Indian film. Hansa Wadkar (born Ratan Bhalchandra) was one of Maharashtra’s best known stage and screen personalities. By the time she was married — to a much older family friend and impresario when she was just 15 — she had already starred in nine or ten movies and was becoming a name in the film world. Supporting her family on her earnings, her brother sick with malaria, and both parents having taken to drink, life was not easy for the young woman. But Hansa was not only beautiful and immensely talented, she was tough, wilful, capricious and headstrong. Her autobiography, Sangtye Aika published in 1970 and translated into English here for the first time, created a sensation for its frankness and boldness. It was later made into a film, Bhumika, by the legendary director Shyam Benegal and starred Smita Patil in the title role. Published by Zubaan.
