Synopsis Blow Hot, Blow Cold by : Ellery Queen

A summertime slaying sets a suburban housewife on the hunt for a killer On a scorching summer afternoon, Nancy Howell bakes in the sun, hoping her neighbor will invite her inside. Lila has central air conditioning—a priceless luxury this time of year—and while Nancy doesn’t think much of her notoriously promiscuous neighbor, she would do anything to cool down. Sadly, Lila doesn’t step outside. She never will again. After more than a day without seeing her neighbor, Nancy finally goes next door and finds Lila sprawled across her bed, a knife buried deep in her chest. When Lila’s cuckolded husband is also found dead, the police label it a tragic murder-suicide—but Nancy isn’t convinced. In this gin-soaked patch of suburbia, adultery is a way of life and jealousy isn’t reason enough for a husband to kill. As the mercury inevitably rises, so will the body count.

Synopsis Fragments against My Ruin by : Farrukh Dhondy

The rebellious life of a novelist, screenwriter and revolutionary activist Born in Poona, India, Farrukh Dhondy came to England in 1964 and immersed himself in radical politics and the counterculture. He kicked off a career in journalism interviewing Pink Floyd and Allen Ginsberg and covering the first meeting between the Beatles and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Dhondy was soon drawn into political activism. He joined the Indian Workers Association and the British Black Panther Movement. Within the radical activist collective Race Today, he worked alongside Darcus Howe and C. L. R. James. An award-winning writer, he co-wrote the ground-breaking sit-com Tandoori Nights. In 1984 he became Channel 4’s Commissioning Editor for multicultural programming and was a driving force behind Desmond’s, Salaam Bombay!, and the trailblazing Bandung File. In Fragments against My Ruin, Dhondy explores a life to salvage precious moments against the inevitable decay of age. The result is a fascinating social and historical document of the late twentieth century, addressing politics, culture, friendship, and the determination to break down boundaries. It is an autobiography packed with compelling anecdotes, such as an insightful take on Jeffrey Archer’s conviction, as well as portraits of Richard Attenborough, Arundhati Roy, V. S. Naipaul, Charles Sobhraj, and many others.

Synopsis The Role of Dictionary Use in the Comprehension of Idiom Variants by : Renata Szczepaniak

The book takes up the subject of dictionary use from the perspective of advanced learners. The study aims to explore the effects of the use of a monolingual learner’s dictionary on students’ performance in a complex comprehension task, i.e. the task of interpreting fragments with modified idioms, which often disrupt the fluent reading process. The theoretical part summarises the results of lexicographic research in the field of receptive dictionary use and discusses its methodological aspects. Moreover, it introduces relevant elements of the reading theory and analyses the nature of idiomatic expressions, their transformations in particular, from a psycholinguistic point of view. Finally, problems connected with the presentation of idioms in monolingual learner’s dictionaries are highlighted. The major, empirical part reports on an experiment, whose aim was to find connections between the consultation process, the way of presenting lexicographic information on idioms, and comprehension scores. The results reveal a mildly positive influence of the monolingual learner’s dictionary on reading comprehension performance. Among the reasons for underachievement were misinterpretation of entries and insufficient processing of dictionary information in context.
