Synopsis The Life and Times of William Carey, Shoemaker & Missionary by : George Smith
William Carey (1761-1834) is known as the "father of modern missions". He was a British Christian missionary, Particular Baptist minister, translator, social reformer and cultural anthropologist who founded the first degree-awarding university in India. After he was forced to leave the British Indian territory by non-Baptist Christian missionaries, he joined the Baptist missionaries in the Danish colony in Serampore. One of his first contributions was to start schools for impoverished children where they were taught reading, writing, accounting and Christianity. He opened the first theological university in Serampore offering divinity degrees, and campaigned to end the practice of sati.

Synopsis May I Again Taste the Sweets of Social Religion by : Luke Waite
For two hundred years, Christians have been inspired by William Carey's commitment to obey the Great Commission. Few know of his devotion to the local church. Yet Carey's ecclesiology warrants our attention. While many works helpfully illuminate aspects of Carey’s ministry, this book pushes past his methods and strategies and examines his ecclesiological faithfulness. By explaining this element of Carey’s doctrine and demonstrating the ways it revealed itself throughout his life, the author argues that Carey’s devotion to the local church was undeniably linked to his God-given success in reaching the lost.

Synopsis The Life of William Carey -- Light to India by : George Smith
""Had he been born in the sixteenth century he might have been a Luther, to give Protestantism to Europe; had he turned his thought and observations merely to natural philosophy he might have been a Newton; but his faculties, consecrated by the Holy Spirit to a still higher end, have gained for him the sublime distinction of having been the Translator of the Scriptures and the Benefactor of India."" ""William Carey -- a man who unites with the most profound and varied attainments the fervour of an evangelist, the piety of a saint, and the simplicity of a child.""
