Synopsis Biliopancreatic Endoscopy by : Kwok-Hung Lai

This book aims to provide the basic technology and recent advances in biliopancreatic endoscopy. The method of Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is popularly applied to enlarge the papillary orifice for removal of biliary and pancreatic stones, to relieve obstruction of distal bile duct or pancreatic duct by nasobiliary / nasopancreatic drainage or stenting, and to remove the premalignant tumor of papilla in recent four decades. The diagnostic role of ERCP is already replaced by the noninvasive images such as abdominal sonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). This book will be contributed by the senior members of the Digestive Endoscopy Society of Taiwan (DEST) who are the leading ERCPists of the medical centers and teaching hospitals in Taiwan. There are 21 chapters, including the various techniques of therapeutic ERCP and EUS, how to approach the difficult cases and prevent complications. Recently, many new facilities and techniques develop to solve the difficult problems, but those new methods may have potential hazard to the patients, particularly in the inexperienced hands. We will share our clinical experience and comments on the recent literatures, to illustrate the standard operative procedures of biliopancreatic endoscopy, and focus on the patients’ safety as well as efficacy. We hope this book will be helpful for the readers in clinical application and facilitate the junior doctors to choose the cost-effective and safe procedure to help their patients in the future.

Synopsis Imaging Complications of Gastrointestinal and Biliopancreatic Endoscopy Procedures by : Massimo Tonolini

This practically oriented book illustrates and reviews the imaging appearances of the common and unusual complications that may occur after upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), colonoscopy, polypectomy, stricture dilatation, and stent placement. Detailed attention is devoted to the assessment of complications after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) positioning, the issues associated with video capsule retention after small bowel capsule endoscopy, and iatrogenic colonic perforations in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. A dedicated chapter explains the expanding role and possibilities of interventional radiology in the treatment of such complications. The pivotal role of multidetector computed tomography (CT) in the detection and grading of endoscopy-specific iatrogenic complications is highlighted. In addition, normal imaging appearances are presented for comparison and information is provided on such aspects as the mechanisms of complications, patient- and procedure-related risk factors, clinical features, and treatment options according to established guidelines. The book will be invaluable in enabling gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and radiologists to diagnose and treat endoscopy-related complications in timely fashion.

Synopsis Trauma Centers and Acute Care Surgery by : Osvaldo Chiara

This book offers an overview of acute care surgery around the world, focusing on the four main branches of this novel subdiscipline: trauma, general emergencies, critical care, and rescue surgery. The book’s primary goal is to provide a general view of acute care surgery, while addressing the most important issues in depth. The content is divided into three parts, the first of which is dedicated to the general organization of trauma centers, including the composition of modern trauma teams. Protocols of activation and action for the trauma team, as well as damage control procedures both in the emergency room and in the surgical theatre, are described. The book also addresses the development of a trauma registry, together with the quality assessment process that can be applied. In turn, the second part describes the principal protocols for making diagnoses, with special attention to circumstances such as unstable hemodynamics, neurological deterioration, normal vital signs, and penetrating injuries. The book subsequently deals with the most important aspects of trauma to the abdomen, chest, and pelvis, with notes on both surgical and intensive care issues. Practical descriptions of how to treat principal injuries to various organs are also provided. Finally, the third part of the book is dedicated to the most frequent general surgical emergencies and rescue surgical approaches, and includes information on diagnostic support with point of care ultrasound and endoscopic advanced techniques. Presenting cutting-edge strategies, this book will be of interest to professionals involved in surgical and intensive care for emergency conditions, such as colonic perforations, obstructions, acute pancreatitis, biliary tree stones, and caustic injuries.

Synopsis Endotherapy in Biliopancreatic Diseases: ERCP Meets EUS by : Massimiliano Mutignani

This volume presents the technical and cultural state of the art of two of the riskiest, most complex and operator-dependent digestive operative techniques: endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). The authors compare old and new techniques, shedding light on the most recent and innovative scientific findings, including those in the field of anatomic pathology and molecular biology considered relevant for the analysis of tissue samples collected during EUS. In view of the technical difficulties specific to these techniques, the book also offers access to online-videos and numerous images, making it a valuable resource both for physicians approaching these techniques for the first time as well as for those already using them. Organized into 7 sections, it describes in detail all techniques related to ERCP/EUS, together with any specific technical equipment required. It also presents a new paradigm based on the latest results in the areas of prevention, diagnosis and management of the most common complications. Clinical outcomes presented in international literature, as well as algorithms – both based on scientific evidence and expert findings – are illustrated and compared to alternative treatments.

Synopsis Endoscopic Ultrasound Management of Pancreatic Lesions by : Antonio Facciorusso

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of current endoscopic ultrasound use in all aspects of pancreatology, from diagnosis to therapy, i.e., from tissue acquisition, with standard fine-needle aspiration and the newer biopsy needles, to less invasive techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography. It also covers novel therapeutic strategies, with a particular focus on ablative treatments and lumen-apposing stents, and describes techniques developed by the editors, in particular combined celiac plexus neurolysis with pancreatic tumor ethanol ablation and elastography-guided fine-needle aspiration. All topics are developed by pursuing an evidence-based approach and several recent meta-analyses, the majority of which were published by the authors. Due to several recent advances in the field, endoscopic ultrasound has taken on a pivotal role in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of pancreatic lesions; as such, the present volume offers an invaluable tool for staying abreast of the state-of-the-art in this field.
