This book presents a case study of human trafficking from Nigeria to the UK, with a focus on practical measures for ending this trafficking. The study addresses the many aspects of human trafficking, including sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, labor exploitation, benefit fraud, and organ harvesting. Despite the huge investment of the international community to eradicate it, this form of modern day slavery continues, and the author urges stakeholders to focus not only on criminals but also on attitudes, cultures, laws and policies that hinder the eradication of modern slavery.

In the light of the urgent need for cooperative and collaborative action against trafficking, this publication presents examples of promising practice from around the world relating to trafficking interventions. This publication contains twelve country reports on efforts by governments in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) to combat human trafficking. Findings include that despite the increased awareness by governments and the civil sector that trafficking is a serious issue, the responses taken, in terms of the concrete measures implemented or devised, vary greatly. Whilst some countries have made considerable progress in improving legislation, establishing appropriate policy mechanisms, protecting victims of trafficking and prosecuting traffickers, others have been less active in bridging the gap between initial recognition and practical policy implementation. The countries covered are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Sweden and the U.S. have each taken leading roles in the global fight against trafficking in persons. The American approach emphasizes strengthening legal codes and law enforcement tools while enhancing services to victims, and has led to a victim-centered approach. The Swedish model criminalizes demand for trafficking and handling the ¿supply¿ through more admin. means, and has led to an equality-centered approach. Both countries believe sex trafficking is an international issue that requires a mixture of law enforcement, social welfare and foreign policies to solve. This report compares the responses in the U.S. and Sweden to identify synergies and divergences that might impact practice in both countries. Illustrations.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime launched a toolkit to help Governments, policy-makers, law enforcement agencies and NGOs tackle human trafficking more effectively. It contains practical tools for police and other law enforcement officers such as a checklist to help identify trafficking victims as well guidance on interviewing victims and victim protection. The toolkit also outlines key aspects of a comprehensive response to human trafficking, such as the need to bring national legislation into line with international standards and strengthen international cooperation in criminal justice, including the extradition of criminals, seizure of assets and confiscation of the proceeds of crime.

Transnational Crime and Human Rights offers an evaluation of the responses to the transnational crime of human trafficking and governance of the issue through a case study of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which comprises Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The book analyses the international and national legal policy frameworks and the role of governments, international and national non-governmental institutions, and regional processes in responding to trafficking issues in the GMS. The book is based on the findings of a three year study conducted in the region, involving interviews with more than 60 individuals from relevant organizations and agencies, and examines the social, political and historical factors, including gender and age, labour exploitation and migration which form the background to human trafficking in the GMS. The authors consider issues of competing mandates, and gaps in strategies for protection and conclude with a discussion of broader lessons to be learned from the GMS situation and suggestions for future governance strategies in the fight against trafficking.

Human trafficking has moved from relative obscurity to a major area of research, policy and teaching over the past ten years.
