Originally published in 1990, Medieval English Drama is an exhaustive bibliography of scholarship on medieval English drama. Each item has been annotated in the bibliography with considerable care; these annotations are descriptive rather than critical and give a clear synopsis of the content of each reference, the texts with which it deals, and a brief indication of its critical position. The bibliography is divided into two sections; editions and collections of plays, and critical works. The bibliography is exhaustive rather than selective and provides English annotations for foreign language works, as well as a list of reviews for most books. The book covers liturgical and folk drama, other forms of entertainment, and related material useful to researchers in the field. The book provides an update of sources not listed in Carl J. Stratman's comprehensive Bibliography of Medieval Drama published in 1972.

First published in 1993. Part of a series on medieval casebooks, this volume six looks at the Chester Mystery Cycle Play manuscripts and comparisons of the York and Chester Cycle. Theologically a product of the Middle Ages, historically a product of the Renaissance, what we today call the Chester Mystery Cycle is a series of twenty-four plays dramatizing the events of salvation history from Creation until Doomsday. One of four surviving English mystery cycles, the Chester Cycle, which originally included a twenty-fifth play of the Assumption surpressed sometime in the mid-sixteenth century, was, until more modern times, last performed in 1575.

Updated and expanded to embrace new developments in the electronic environment and new emphases on multicultural and female influences and accomplishments, the fourth edition (3rd ed., 1988) of this guide to humanities information sources includes 1,250 major entries. Chapters cover general humanities, philosophy, religion, visual arts, performing arts, and language and literature. Organized as previous editions, the volume provides one chapter on sources and another on access for each area. James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide, which Choice calls "the standard guide in the field," evaluates important reference materials in English studies. Since the publication of the first edition in 1989, tens of thousands of students and educators have used the Guide as an aid to scholarly research. In the new edition Harner has added entries describing resources published since May 2001 and has revised nearly half the entries from the fourth edition. The fifth edition contains more than 1,000 entries, which discuss an additional 1,555 books, articles, and electronic resources and cite 723 reviews. Readers of earlier editions will notice the inclusion of substantially more electronic resources, particularly reliable sites sponsored by academic institutions and learned societies, to account for the proliferation of bibliographic databases, text archives, and other online resources. This edition also features a new section on cultural studies.

It has been widely accepted that the 10th-century liturgical plays developed naturally as a religious entity from the Mass. This approach is critiqued in The Origin of Medieval Drama where Leonard Goldstein places the development of the plays within the socio-economic context of the period, most notably the rapid rise of feudalism. Goldstein argues that the plays were a response by the Church to a decline in faith brought on by the burdens of feudalism on the peasantry. However, instead of revitalising faith, the plays which sought to assure the peasantry of their salvation actually represented and therefore reinforced the emerging private property relation. In looking at the origins of ancient Greek drama where scholars have concentrated more on social and cultural issues, Goldstein develops a Marxist model for the origins of medieval drama.

Medieval Drama is a textbook, designed to be used by A level and undergraduate students of theatre and drama. It is divided into two major areas, mystery cycles and morality plays, and it examines the plays from a performance perspective. The book makes special reference to those texts contained within selections of plays which can be readily obtained by students, including A.C.Cawley's Everyman and Medieval Miracle Plays (Dent). The staging conventions of pageant waggon performance, place and scaffold playing and the drama of the Hall are explored in relation to the cultural context of the medieval period.
