In the first book is recounted the author's 30 years' experience as an exorcist. "I will first state what the demons said about the present state of the Church and their diabolical plans... Then the plan Mary seems to have adopted to come to the aid of the Church in her present plight." The second book is an account of an exorcism in Iowa in 1928.

Begone Satan!, is a soul-stirring account of diabolical possession in Earling, Iowa in 1928, in which a woman cursed by her own father was possessed from her 14th year until her 40th year, the year of the exorcism. Mary Crushes the Serpent, is the author's account of his 30 years' experience as an exorcist. He writes: "I will first state what the demons said about the present state of the Church, and then I will relate the diabolical plans which they, according to their own admission, are keeping under cover... The object of this document is to show the maternal solicitude of the Blessed Virgin for the Church of her Divine Son, as also to publish the plan Mary seems to have adopted to come to the aid of the Church in her present plight."

Father Celestine Kapsner, O.S.B. began working at the St. John's parish mission in 1928. Among other duties and activities, Kapsner was in charge of the garden. Kapsner was known to have taken part in many exorcisms. He translated a 1928 account of an exorcism by Father Theophilus Riesinger from a German magazine article, and published it in 1935 as Begone Satan! Father Kapsner died in Minnesota in January 1973. This book is important because it brings a detailed account of an American exorcism to a large audience for the first time in the United States.
