Synopsis War in the Nineteenth Century by : Jeremy Black
This book provides an accessible and up-to-date account of the rich military history of the nineteenth century. It takes a fresh approach, making novel links with conflict and coercion, and moving away from teleological emphases. Naval developments and warfare are included, as are social and cultural dimensions of military activity. Leading military historian Jeremy Black offers the reader a twenty-first century approach to this period, particularly through his focus on the dynamic drive provided by different forms of military goals, or "tasking". This allows echoes with modern warfare to come to the fore and provides a fuller understanding of a period sometimes considered solely as background to the total war of 1914-45. Alongside state-to-state warfare and the move toward "total war", Black's emphasis on different military goals gives due weight to trans-oceanic conflict at the expense of non-Europeans. Irregular, internal and asymmetric war are all considered, ranging from local insurgencies to imperial expeditions, and provide a deliberate shift from Western-centricity. At the very cutting edge of its field, this book is a must read for all students and scholars of military history and its related disciplines.

Synopsis England in the Nineteenth Century Volume 1 by : A. F. Fremantle
Originally published in 1929, this volume discusses the early effects of the industrial revolution – the condition of the cotton spinners, the hardships for labouring children, the overcrowded prisons and other brutal punishments. At this time the principal branch of local government was the Poor Law and this book discusses how, in the monumental task of providing workhouses for the destitute, the England of the eighteenth century had completely failed. As well as social history, the book also covers military and political history.

Synopsis From Tamaki-Makau-Rau to Auckland by : R. C. J. Stone
The isthmus between two harbours on which modern Auckland now stands and which Maori called Tamaki-makau-rau was a virtual population void when Hobson bought it in 1840 from the resident owners as the site of his new capital. But it was reputed in former times to be the most densely settled region in Aotearoa. This book explains that paradox. It traces the history of the region from the beginnings of settlement about eight hundred years ago up to 1840. It uses parallel and often corrobative versions drawn from Maori oral traditions and Land Court records, and from the work of archaeologists and pre-historians.

Synopsis Panoramas, 1787–1900 Vol 1 by : Laurie Garrison
The panorama is primarily a visual medium, but a variety of print matter mediated its viewing; adverts, reviews, handbills and a descriptive programme accompanied by an annotated key to the canvas. The short accounts, programs, reviews, articles and lectures collected here are the primary historical sources left to us.
