I was born in Sydney Australia, educated at Borromeo, Holy Cross College and Malvina High School at Ryde. Boxing was a passion from a very early age that only an enthusiast would understand or appreciate. An involvement of over 50 years, at all levels from an amateur boxer to trainer and official. Married with three sons and one granddaughter, I am a part-time writer of short stories and record books. A martial artist in the Korean forms of Hapkido and Kumdo, obtaining Black Belt levels. Now semi retired I fi nd it important to give as much back as I have received from life, with gratitude.

Born to former slaves on St. Croix in 1860, Peter Jackson made his name as a boxer with his smooth, fast style and a dangerous one-two combination. After immigrating to Australia, Jackson became that country's national heavyweight champion in 1886 before moving on to the United States and claiming the title of Colored Champion of the World in 1888. For the next ten years Peter Jackson remained undefeated, finally losing to the great Jim Jeffries in 1898. Although he never received a shot at the heavyweight title--reigning heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan refused to defend his title against a black man--Jackson remains one of the greatest heavyweights ever.

Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the world, reaching back to the Ancient Greeks, although it has become popular only in the past century or so. But, in some ways, it is a rather complicated sport since – to avoid unnecessary harm – it has been endowed with rules to keep it clean, referees to see the rules are obeyed, and organizations to regulate the sport. Boxing was once largely amateur, although the professional bouts attracted the most attention, but now it is also an Olympic sport. The introduction provides a broad view of boxing’s history while the chronology traces events from 688 B.C. to 2012 A.D. Not all that much has been written on boxing that is not ephemeral, but much of that literature can be found in the bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of boxing.

With 50 years of passionate involvement in cricket; extensive effort to constantly understand and improve what I do; insightful exploration of such things as ancient Chinese and Japanese texts as well as modern psychology concepts, I have developed my own philosophies and ways of doing things in cricket. Many of these ways are unique to me and opposite to conventional instruction. Whilst my hearing, memory and physical condition are all in decline, the satisfaction gained from understanding what motivates and can improve an individual remains a major source of inspiration. Often I have observed people with extraordinary talent give up just short of what they could achieve, yet others with less talent, but with an indomitable spirit continue on and reap the rewards of success. Why does this happen? We simply have not been educated in how to harness and use our thinking minds wisely. The result is that our efforts in life are often hit or miss. Importantly the WISDOM contained in my book, can help my readers better identify, connect with and meet the challenges that their involvement in cricket will bring.
