Synopsis Handbook of Deep Trade Agreements by : Aaditya Mattoo

Deep trade agreements (DTAs) cover not just trade but additional policy areas, such as international flows of investment and labor and the protection of intellectual property rights and the environment. Their goal is integration beyond trade or deep integration. These agreements matter for economic development. Their rules influence how countries (and hence, the people and firms that live and operate within them) transact, invest, work, and ultimately, develop. Trade and investment regimes determine the extent of economic integration, competition rules affect economic efficiency, intellectual property rights matter for innovation, and environmental and labor rules contribute to environmental and social outcomes. This Handbook provides the tools and data needed to analyze these new dimensions of integration and to assess the content and consequences of DTAs. The Handbook and the accompanying database are the result of collaboration between experts in different policy areas from academia and other international organizations, including the International Trade Centre (ITC), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and World Trade Organization (WTO).

Synopsis EU Bilateral Trade Agreements and Intellectual Property: For Better or Worse? by : Josef Drexl

This book focuses on a new generation of bilateral and regional agreements negotiated by the EU with developing countries and which include intellectual property (IP) provisions setting standards exceeding those of the TRIPS Agreement. The contributions critically analyse the IP standards found in these agreements; their potential for reforming the international IP system; the implications for the multilateral IP system and other areas of international law such as human rights; and the often neglected topic of implementing the IP obligations in these agreements.

Synopsis International Policy Rules and Inequality by : José Antonio Ocampo

Over the past decades, the world has seen a dramatic increase in inequality. To what extent have the rules that govern the global economy, formally or informally, affected this trend? How can global governance arrangements be reformed to counteract them? In this book, an interdisciplinary group of prominent scholars scrutinizes how the rules of global economic governance—or the lack thereof—determine the extent and growth of inequality. Economists, political scientists, lawyers, and other experienced contributors bring together cutting-edge research on global rule making and inequality, exploring how international rules can exacerbate inequalities among and within countries to show the crucial interactions between policy choices and the distribution of income and wealth. They provide an in-depth examination of the rules governing foreign-investment protection, cross-border financial flows, and intellectual property rights, as well as the lack of standards governing international taxation and the channels through which they might affect inequality. With a focus on ambitious and achievable reforms, this book offers concrete steps toward global economic governance capable of counteracting inequitable wealth distribution and bringing about fairer economic growth.

Synopsis Assessing the Development Friendliness of Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in the Economic Partnership Agreements & An Analytical and Comparative Guide to the Dispute Settlement Provisions in the EU's FTAs by : Mehmet Karli

This report consists of two main parts. The first Part is the report entitled 'Assessing the Development Friendliness of Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in the Economic Partnership Agreements'. The second part is composed of four different Appendices. These Appendices together form the 'Analytical and Comparative Guide to the Dispute Settlement Provisions in the EU's FTAs'. The four Appendices are as follows: * Appendix A: First Generation of Dispute Settlement clauses in the EU's RTAs * Appendix B: Comparison of the EU's and the ACP's Negotiation Positions on the Review of the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism * Appendix C: Timeline of Disputes under the WTO, the EU-Mexico and the EU-Chile FTAs, and the EU-CARIFORUM EPA * Appendix D: Analytical & Comparative Guide to Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in the WTO, the EU-Mexico FTA, the EU-Chile FTA and the EPAs The Report and the Guide (Appendices) are connected to each other; in that, the Report frequently refers to the tables provided in the Appendices therefore it should be read together with them. On the other hand, the Guide could also be used separately for detailed comparisons across several agreements and could serve negotiators by making it easier for them to draw on other agreement's relevant provisions.

Synopsis Development, Trade, and the WTO by : Bernard M. Hoekman

Publisher's description: Developing countries are increasingly confronted with the need to address trade policy related issues in international agreements, most prominently the World Trade Organization (WTO). New WTO negotiations on a broad range of subjects were launched in November 2001. Determining whether and how international trade agreements can support economic development is a major challenge. Stakeholders in developing countries must be informed on the issues and understand how their interests can be pursued through international cooperation. This handbook offers guidance on the design of trade policy reform, surveys key disciplines and the functioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and discusses numerous issues and options that confront developing countries in using international cooperation to improve domestic policy and obtain access to export markets. Many of the issues discussed are also relevant in the context of regional integration agreements. Separate sections of the handbook summarize what constitutes sound trade policy; the major aspects of the WTO from a development perspective; policy issues in the area of merchandise trade and the liberalization of international transactions in services; protection of intellectual property rights and economic development; new regulatory subjects that are emerging in the agenda of trade talks; and enhancing participation of developing countries in the global trading system.
