Synopsis Assassination! July 14 by : Ben Abro
July 14. One of Europe's most sinister terrorist organizations hatches a brilliant plan to assassinate the feared and powerful leader of France, President Charles de Gaulle. Max Palk, an extraordinarily talented British secret agent, is summoned to Paris to hunt down the assassins before it is too late. Ensnared in a terrifying web of doublecross and death, Palk races against the clock to outmaneuver, outshoot, and outthink his increasingly desperate foes. A decade before The Day of the Jackal appeared, Ben Abro's Assassination! July 14 became an international sensation, thanks to its sizzling plot, an ingenious, intellectual hero, and a realistic depiction of France's volatile political scene in the 1960s. In fact, the novel proved too real, provoking outrage and a lawsuit that shut down its publication. For the first time in decades, this gripping, underground thriller is again widely available. The equally riveting story behind the novel and the controversy it spawned are carefully explained in an informative essay by James D. Le Sueur. Drawing upon interviews with the authors, court transcripts, and recent evidence and scholarship, Le Sueur examines how an item of popular culture could have had such national and international repercussions.

Synopsis A Savage War of Peace by : Alistair Horne
Thoroughly sharp and honest treatment of a brutal conflict. The Algerian War (1954-1962) was a savage colonial war, killing an estimated one million Muslim Algerians and expelling the same number of European settlers from their homes. It was to cause the fall of six French prime minsters and the collapse of the Fourth Repbulic. It came close to bringing down de Gaulle and - twice - to plunging France into civil war.The story told here contains heroism and tragedy, and poses issues of enduring relevance beyond the confines of either geography or time. Horne writes with the extreme intelligence and perspicacity that are his trademarks.

Synopsis Assassination, Preparations & Consequences by : Simon Marinker
When I started this book, the word 'Assassination' in the title referred to the homicide of a powerful military and political individual whose elimination could alter the course of world history. The word 'Preparations' included the choice of an assassin, the plans for the actual deed, those involved in the planning and those who desired that it take place and succeed. The word 'Consequences' included an elaborate scheme to silence the assassin, and to cover up those involved in his elimination. The cover-up would initiate a domino sequence with repercussions that continue up to the present time. However, the title could also be applied to the assassinations that were carried out - by the millions - in the Nazi Holocaust. The preparations were clearly documented in the detailed archives of 'Kristallnacht' and those of the 'Wannsee Conference'. The consequences included the Nuremberg Trials, in which the evidence against the assassins, and those guilty of aiding and abetting the crime, was taken from the very Nazi archives of which they were so proud. Then came those who aligned themselves with the Holocaust Denial, and the neoNazi resurgence was alive and well across the world. Finally, when even such mass slaughter of defenceless noncombatants could be denied, defended or even ignored, the world was ready for a new wave of terrorism on a massive scale. Such documented horrors required an antidote, and this has been provided in the book by the personal stories of a retired surgeon and his wife. These are stories of determination and happiness in facing the varied challenges of daily life. -Simon Marinker

Synopsis Algeria: Struggle for Truth and Justice by : Roger Goldsmith
Bodies lying in pools of blood in the streets of Algiers all day, buildings destroyed by bombs and fire, up to a million French and others fleeing the country... Roger Goldsmith arrived in Algeria six months before a joyful Algerian independence from France, followed by a violent Algerian military takeover and two military coups. In his personal account, Algeria: Struggle for Truth and Justice, he follows French and French Algerian sources that argue that le pouvoir, generals of the security forces, the DRS, manipulating armed Islamists, were behind the assassination of a president, the hijacking of a plane, some 200,000 deaths, torture and perhaps 18,000 enforced disappearances in the 1990s. The tragedy of the 1990s has been presented as a ‘national tragedy’ with nobody responsible for crimes against humanity. Voluntary work for Amnesty International on the human rights situation there led Roger to work on behalf of families of the disappeared. Later, he assisted Nassera Dutour, who has been leading and inspiring families in 20 years of struggle, vainly seeking information about their relatives. Is Algeria now at a turning point in its history? Since February 2019, hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps millions, many of them young, have marched peaceably in the streets of Algiers and throughout the country demanding change, democracy and an end to military rule. Might it now be possible for families to look forward to the day when their efforts to obtain truth and justice are successful and those responsible are tried before an International Criminal Court?’.
