The sketch was made at that time and was subsequently used as a model for several paintings of the martyred President, one of which hangs in the front lobby of the United States Senate. Congress recognized Colonel Thorp as an outstanding artist back in the '7os when it arranged for a small studio for his use on the roof of the Capitol, during which time he painted a portrait of hr.
