Synopsis Around the World in Fifty Sites! by : Susan Battersby
Many people create a bucket list of things to do before they die. But how many of these are chosen by other people, in particular by the British public? In 2002, the BBC aired a programme entitled "Fifty places to see before you die" - a list of cities, natural wonders and ancient sites, chosen as the best places to see from around the world. This hour long programme changed my life! I met my husband, Richard, on holiday in Venezuela in 2000, and like everybody else, we would trawl through the travel brochures looking for inspiration for our holidays. After watching this television programme, I made the decision that we would make every effort to visit all the fifty sites listed. It took us twelve years to complete our journey, and this is my story, based on your chosen itinerary.

Synopsis Around the World in 50 Years by : Albert Podell
A story of visiting—and surviving—every nation on Earth: “Part travel adventure tale and part madcap farcical comedy . . . Hunter Thompson meets Anthony Bourdain.” —Chicago Tribune This is the inspiring story of an ordinary guy who achieved two great goals that others had told him were impossible. First, he set a record for the longest automobile journey ever made around the world, during the course of which he blasted his way out of minefields, survived a breakdown atop the Peak of Death, came within seconds of being lynched in Pakistan, and lost three of the five men who started with him, two to disease, one to the Vietcong. After that—although it took him forty-seven more years—Albert Podell set another record by going to every country on Earth. He achieved this by surviving riots, revolutions, civil wars, trigger-happy child soldiers, voodoo priests, robbers, pickpockets, corrupt cops, and Cape buffalo. He went around, under, or through every kind of earthquake, cyclone, tsunami, volcanic eruption, snowstorm, and sandstorm that nature threw at him. He ate everything from old camel meat and rats to dung beetles and monkey’s brain. And he overcame attacks by crocodiles, hippos, anacondas, giant leeches, flying crabs—and several beautiful girlfriends who insisted that he stop this nonsense and marry them. Albert Podell’s Around the World in 50 Years is a remarkable tale of quiet courage, dogged persistence, undying determination, and an uncanny ability to extricate himself from one perilous situation after another—and return with some of the most memorable, frightening, and hilarious adventure stories you have ever read. “Even if your desire for exotic travel never takes you out of your reading chair, you’ll find Podell a fascinating companion.” —Bookpage “Unquestionably entertaining . . . There is never a dull moment.” —Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die by : Chris Santella
It’s estimated that 50 to 60 million Americans count birding among their hobbies. Some hang feeders in their backyards and accumulate yard lists; others participate in annual “Christmas Counts”; a select few travel to the ends of the earth in an effort to see every bird in the world. With Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die, Chris Santella takes the best-selling “Fifty Places” recipe and applies it to this most popular pastime. Santella presents some of the greatest bird-watching venues in the United States and abroad through interviews with prominent birders, from tour leaders and conservationists to ornithologists and academics. Interviewees include ornithologist Kenn Kaufman; David Allen Sibley, author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds; Rose Ann Rowlett, the “mother of modern birding”; John Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology; and Steve McCormick, president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy. The places vary from the urban (New York City’s Central Park) to the mystical (the cloud forests of Triunfo in Chiapas, Mexico) to the extremely remote (the sub-Arctic islands of New Zealand). The book includes 40 gorgeous photographs that capture the vibrancy of our feathered friends, and the beautiful places they call home.
