Synopsis Anna's Miracles by : Anna B. Davis

Anna s Miracles is the auto biography of my life. I have tried to tell the simple story of how my husband. Stuart and I, fell in love and lived an adventurous life. We were both raised on ranches in West Texas Hill Country and when we became adults and married, we moved out of our comfort zone and embraced a world far different than what we knew as children. We fi rst went to California, then to Washington, D. C., and later to other parts of the United States, including Alaska. My husband helped build a tracking station for the Air Force in Pretoria, South Africa, and in Alaska. Stuart was a Tech Rep for Philco/Ford Corp; and we went from one state to another as the job required. I was expected to set up housekeeping under various conditions, some were not so easy, like living in Alaska and having to commute from one island to another by sea plane.. Having to pack up and move whenever a job opened up even if it meant having to follow Stuart later and not move with him. We managed to stay together and make a good life for ourselves wherever we happened to be.. I have documented our many moves and our life as it fi nally settled down and we found home back in Texas to raise our two daughters. Stuart became a Space Scientist at NASA still employed by Philco/Ford/Loreal/Aerospace Division. In 1993, I was diagnosed with Stage IV, Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma. The Doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center found cancer in both sides of my backbone and bone marrow, fi ve tumors in my head, and 89 lymph nodes with cancer from the neck down. I entered a 10 year Clinical Trial, and I was the only patient to survive . My Doctor told me that My Jesus must have healed me, he could not explain why I was still alive. Our family faced many diffi culties during our life but we made it through by believing in God and trusting in Him . I hope my Journal brings hope to those who have diffi culties and think that they are alone. God is real and still answers prayers today.

Synopsis Shantyboat Journal by : Harlan Hubbard

Harlan and Anna Hubbard, newly married in middle age, build the boat of their dreams and drift down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Harlan is an artist and a writer with a poet's eye for the beauty of the world. Anna is a musician and an elegant master of the arts of graceful living. For seven years (1944-1951) the Hubbards make their home on their little boat, drifting with the river, camping on the land. Together they learn how to create and sustain a self-sufficient way of life that is infinitely fulfilling. It is a "river way of life"—free-flowing, endowed with the love of nature, the discovery of community, the rewards of good work, and the joy of creativity. The journal is a witness to history, embracing the gentle spirit of an America now lost to modern "progress." It is one of the most significant renderings in our literature of a deeply felt sense of place. Out of this journal grew Harlan Hubbard's enduring classic, Shantyboat, and his idyllic Shantyboat on the Bayous. His later Payne Hollow is a Thoreauvian testament to the values embodied in the homesteading life the Hubbards lived for four decades after they completed their epic river journey. Their life together has been praised by Wendell Berry as "one of the finest accomplishments of our time." The Shantyboat Journal reveals its creation.

Synopsis Anna Held and the Birth of Ziegfeld's Broadway by : Eve Golden

Anna Held was America's most popular musical comedy star during the two decades preceding World War I. In the colorful world of New York theater during La Belle Époque, she epitomized everything that was glamorous and provocative about turn-of-the-century Broadway. Overcoming an impoverished life as an orphan to become a music hall star in Paris, Held rocketed to fame in America. From 1896 to 1910, she starred in hit after hit and quickly replaced Lillian Russell as the darling of the theatrical world. The first wife of legendary producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., Held was the brains and inspiration behind his Follies. Together, they brought the Paris scene to New York, complete with lavish costumes and sets and a chorus of stunningly beautiful women, dubbed "The Anna Held Girls." While Held was known for a champagne giggle as well as for her million-dollar bank account, there was a darker side to her life. She concealed her Jewish background and her daughter from a previous marriage. She suffered through her two husbands' gambling problems and Ziegfeld's conspicuous affairs with showgirls. With the outbreak of fighting in Europe, Held returned to France to support the war effort. She entertained troops and delivered medical supplies, and was once briefly captured by the German army. Anna Held and the Birth of Ziegfeld's Broadway reveals one of the most remarkable women in the history of theater. With access to previously unseen family records and photographs, Eve Golden has uncovered the details of an extraordinary woman's life in 1900s New York.
