Synopsis Annals of Public Education in the State of New York, from 1626 to 1746 (Classic Reprint) by : Daniel Johnson Pratt

Excerpt from Annals of Public Education in the State of New York, From 1626 to 1746 The plates from which these Annals were first printed, were destroyed by the great fire which occurred at Weed, Parsons Co.'s printing establishment, in April, 1871. It thus became necessary, in carrying out the foregoing order of the Senate, to reset the entire work. A few errors and considerable new material having, mean while, come under the author's notice, he has availed himself of this opportunity, at the cost of no little time and labor, to supply a revised and enlarged edition of the original work ordered by the Senate. Synopsis The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York (Classic Reprint) by : A. Emerson Palmer

Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given. Synopsis The District School Journal of the State of New-York, 1851, Vol. 11 (Classic Reprint) by : Samuel S. Randall

Excerpt from The District School Journal of the State of New-York, 1851, Vol. 11 I plead guilty, then, to the charge of having, with all the earnestness and ability of which I was capable, recommended the passage of a law, securing the bene fits of common school education, fully and freely, to every child of the State Of a suitable age. This mea sure was earnestly recommended by some of my pre decessors, and I believed it to be demanded, not only by a sound public Opinion, but by con'siderations inti mately associated with the peculiar structure and func tions of our republican institutions. It was, in my judgment, the paramount duty of the State to provide for all its future citizens, the means of obtaining that amount and degree of knowledge essential to the proper performance Of the duties to be devolved upon them, and to the discharge Of the responsibilities they were to assume.
