Synopsis Andersonville (Civil War Classics) by : John McElroy

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Diversion Books is publishing seminal works of the era: stories told by the men and women who led, who fought, and who lived in an America that had come apart at the seams. For men who endured the horrors of the Civil War, Andersonville Prison represented an even more terrifying level of hell. The prisoners starved while disease ran rampant. John McElroy was captured in battle and transferred to Andersonville. This is his eye-opening, bestselling account of his imprisonment in a place where one of every four men died.

Synopsis Andersonville Violets by : Herbert Winslow Collingwood

Within the walls of the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp, a Confederate guard and his Northern captive find their fates intertwined When John Rockwell, a Yankee captive at Andersonville, reaches across the prison's "dead line" to pluck a bunch of violets, Confederate guard Jack Foster is supposed to shoot him. Conflicted over thoughts of Lucy Moore, his girl back home, Foster lowers his gun. Spared, Rockwell lives to escape Andersonville, and Foster is discharged in disgrace. After the war, the paths of the two men are predictably divergent. Foster, as a symbol of the Confederacy, is a burned-out, bitter shell. Rockwell, as an emblem of the North, is thrifty and eager to make something of himself. When Rockwell's ambitions lead him to take charge of a rundown plantation in Foster's native Mississippi, the prisoner and guard find their paths crossing once again. The struggle of these men represents the post-war chasm between North and South and raises issues of forgiveness and renewal.

Synopsis Andersonville by : Raymond F. Baker

Excerpt from Andersonville: The Story of a Civil War Prison Camp There were two entrances to the stockade, both of which were located on the west front. The North Gate stood about 400 feet north of Stockade Branch and the South Gate about 200 feet south of the stream. F rom each gate a street ran eastward through the prison to the opposite wall. South Street, at the South Gate, was used to haul in rations to the prisoners. The street leading from the North Gate was called Market Street (or Broadway on some contemporary maps), and along it the prison sutler and other food merchants set up shops and stalls. Both streets were about 10 feet wide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An explosive novel of the Civil War about one man’s escape from a notorious Confederate prison camp---and his dramatic return to save his men. July 1864. Union officer Nathan Parker has been imprisoned at nightmarish Andersonville prison camp in Georgia along with his soldiers. As others die around them, Nathan and his men hatch a daring plan to allow him to escape through a tunnel and make his way to Vicksburg, where he intends to alert his superiors to the imprisonment and push for military action. His efforts are blocked by higher-ups in the military, so Parker takes matters into his own hands. Together with a shady, dangerous ex-soldier and smuggler named Marcel Lafarge and a fascinating collection of cutthroats, soldiers, and castoffs, a desperate Parker organizes a private rescue mission to free his men before it’s too late. Exciting, thoroughly researched, and dramatic, Escape from Andersonville is a Civil War novel filled with action, memorable characters, and vividly realized descriptions of the war’s final year.

Synopsis Women's Work in the Civil War (Civil War Classics) by : L.P. Brockett

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Diversion Books is publishing seminal works of the era: stories told by the men and women who led, who fought, and who lived in an America that had come apart at the seams. While men fought the battles, it was the women who fought the war. Thrust onto sides of a fence, still decades away from even the right to vote, women kept the country from crumbling upon itself during the brutal conflict. These profiles of women both historically notable, like Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix, as well as women history has forgotten until now, will enthrall readers with stories of the war as seen by those who healed soldiers, kept the homefront safe, and ensured that the country would be strong after the final shot was fired.
