Synopsis An Ovid Reader by : Carole E. Newlands

Ovid’s poetry, once regarded as superficial in comparison to that of other Augustan poets, is now hailed for its artistry, its mastery at storytelling, and the profound influence it has had on literature and art from the poet’s own time to the present day. This Reader’s commentary gives grammatical and syntactical assistance, seasoned with appreciation of the fine points of Ovid’s complex literary style. Latin selections are drawn in part from his elegiac poems and demonstrate the new range of directions for elegy developed by Ovid: not merely love elegy (Amores, and with a fresh epistolary form in Heroides); but also didactic and aetiological elegy (Ars Amatoria, Fasti), each with a twist on expected subject-matter; and exile poetry (Tristia, Epistulae ex Ponto), whose elegiac themes are adapted from earlier poetry to express emotional as well as political meaning after Ovid’s banishment from his beloved Rome. Select passages from the epic Metamorphoses, a brilliant experiment that uses a variety of genres under a unifying theme, fill out the collection with the work acknowledged to be Ovid’s major achievement. Features of this edition: Introduction to Ovid’s life, works, style, and meter556 lines of unadapted Latin text in 30 selections from 7 works: Amores 1.1.1–4; 1.6.27–40; 1.9.1–20; 1.13.1–18, 21–26, 47–48; 2.15.1–28 • Heroides 3.1–4, 113–20; 5.61–88; 7.181–96 • Ars Amatoria 1.1–4, 17–34; 1.89–102; 1.505–24; 3.329–48 • Metamorphoses 1.168–88; 2.227–34, 272–84; 3.173–98; 3.402–17; 4.93–127; 5.585–600; 10.270–94; 13.764–69, 838–53; 15.75–95; 15.871–79 • Fasti 1.89–102; 2.813–36; 4.305–28; 5.193–212 • Tristia 1.7.15–30; 4.6.1–18; 4.10.1–2, 17–26, 41–66 • Epistulae ex Ponto 3.3.5–20Notes at the back and complete vocabularySuggested reading; five illustrations

Synopsis Ovid's Amores, Book One by : Caroline A. Perkins

Students of Latin have long enjoyed the poetry of Ovid, but his love poems, aptly titled Amores, have proved more difficult to introduce into the classroom. Curricular changes and increased appreciation of sophisticated love poetry are finally making room for the Amores. This edition of the first book of the Amores—the only one available for both intermediate- and advanced-level classes—addresses the needs of students of varying abilities and experience, helping them comprehend, and more fully enjoy, the rich complexities of Ovid's poetry. In their introduction to the volume, Maureen B. Ryan and Caroline A. Perkins recount Ovid's career as a poet, describe the elegiac genre, and explain elegiac meter and style. For the Latin text, they briefly introduce each poem, acquainting students with relevant subject matter and themes. Their commentary provides helpful notes clarifying grammatical constructions, word order, ellipsis, and other complexities of the Latin language that can challenge even the most experienced student. On the assumption that students will gain skills as they work through each poem, Ryan and Perkins give extensive and repeated assistance at the beginning of the text, tapering off as the student's facility increases. Throughout their commentary, they highlight thematic points of interest; explain mythological, cultural, and literary allusions; and stress the importance of Ovid's literary innovations. In addition to the critical apparatus accompanying each poem, this volume features a glossary of literary terms, a comprehensive Latin-to-English vocabulary, and an up-do-date bibliography.

Synopsis Ovid by : Sara Mack

Of all the poets of ancient Rome Ovid had perhaps the most influence on the art and literature of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Even today he is probably the most accessible of all classical poets to the non-specialist, both in his subject matter and in his style. Ovid is no less fascinated than we are by the human psyche and by the ways men and women relate to each other, and many of his views on these questions seem centuries ahead of his time. Ovid’s interest in narrative technique is so much like ours that modern critical terms such as “reader-response” could have been coined for his experiments with story telling. In the creation of different personae and points of view his ingenuity is endless. For the Amores he invented a posing poet-lover; for the Art of Love, his narrator is a cynical professor of seduction who is convinced, quite wrongly, that he has love down to a science. In the Heroides, a series of verse-letters from the famous women of legend to their lovers, he brilliantly recreated great moments of heroic mythology from the feminine point of view. The longest and most enchanting of his works, the Metamorphoses, an epic-length poem on the infinite changes of mythology and history, afforded him the richest opportunities of all to experiment with narrative techniques. In this book Sara Mack introduces Ovid to the general reader. After considering Ovid’s modernity, Mack surveys his poetry chronologically. Next she examines his most influential poems: the Amores, Heroides, Art of Love, and Metamorphoses. Finally she explores Ovidian wit, concluding with a look at Ovid’s influence on the arts.
