Synopsis Ounce of Prevention: Mainly for Men by : Dr Anthony Vendryes

An Ounce of Prevention - Especially for Women, though well-received, has created a clamour for a book that addressed male health concerns specifically. The discipline of writing a weekly column in the premier Jamaican daily newspaper, the Gleaner for over fifteen years has been very useful. It has caused me to focus on presenting a clear and practical message on specific issues of health and wellness in approximately a thousand words. This book, An Ounce of Prevention - Mainly for Men is a compilation of those messages with the male reader particularly in mind. Some important topics in the earlier book that apply to both men and women have been updated and presented along with new subjects in four sections titled: Healthy Ideas, Healing Agents, Danger Areas and Common Complaints. A fifth section - Male Issues - focuses exclusively on matters of relevance to men. Close to 100 subjects are covered in these five sections. Like the previous volumes, each chapter in this book can be read by itself in any order and it delivers a simple massage on that particular subject. Subject headings are in alphabetical order for easy access. References have been simplified and medical jargon kept to a minimum. The appendix and the useful references section provide support information.

Synopsis Just an Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure by : James L. D'Adamo, Dr.

Dr. James D’Adamo burst onto the world of natural medicine in the 1970s with his revolutionary discovery of, and approach to, healing based on a person’s blood type. Written in the infancy of America’s modern natural-healing movement, his first book, One Man’s Food . . . is someone else’s poison, detailed his unique, individual treatment method that correlated a person’s type of blood with diet, exercise, and spiritual practice. Just An Ounce of Prevention . . . Is Worth a Pound of Cure comes almost 30 years later, as people around the world have increasingly awakened to the efficacy of natural remedies . . . and at a time when the American health-care system is increasingly failing the public. In this fascinating book, Dr. D’Adamo exhorts us to take responsibility for our own health and prevent chronic degenerative diseases using his newest discoveries, which has given him the opportunity to treat more than 50,000 patients. He explains which foods and exercises are right for each of us, what assets and liabilities we’re born with, and how our minds can work to better process information. This book contains Dr. D’Adamo’s most up-to-date and comprehensive teachings; and includes recipes, exercise regimens, and a panoply of natural therapies he recommends to the patients at his institute. An Ounce of Prevention is the consummate statement on natural healing from this generation’s most original naturopath. As Dr. D’Adamo writes: "We are all here for a purpose, and we can only aspire to our physical and spiritual fulfillment when the body is healthy and the mind clear. Blood types are a Truth of Nature and, if followed, will provide a person with the physical and spiritual health that Nature has intended for them."

Synopsis An Ounce of Prevention by : Henryk J. Sokalski

"The science of medicine was the first to discover that 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, '" Henryk Sokalski reminds us as he begins this study of a unique United Nations mission. "In the political realm, however, its full potential has yet to be realized." Sokalski, former head of the United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP) in the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, provides the ultimate insider's look at the UN's attempt to establish a mission in this former Yugoslav republic before the imminent eruption of mass violence spilling over from neighboring Balkan states Serbia and its overwhelmingly ethnic Albanian province of Kosovo in particular. An "Ounce of Prevention" and the UNPREDEP mission itself begins in early 1995 with a telephone call to Sokalski at his Warsaw home from UN Secretary General Boutros-Ghali, and it ends several years later in a disappointing Security Council veto of the mission's renewal. In between, Sokalski's study of this "novel experiment in UN peacekeeping" describes the mission's three "pillars" as well as contending theories on preventive diplomacy and early preventive action, contemporary Balkan history, and the daily bureaucratic and human challenges of reinventing civil society. All the while, Sokalski attempts to answer the question of whether the mission's renewed mandate could have prevented the country's recent destructive insurgency and whether UNPREDEP's truncated success could serve as a model for future UN preventive deployments."

In the war on drugs, children are on the front lines. Is just saying no protection enough? The authors examine the results of popular school drug prevention programs to determine how effective they are at reducing cocaine use and whether these programs are money well spent, when compared with drug-enforcement or drug-treatment programs.

Synopsis Defining Prevention Science by : Zili Sloboda

Whoever coined the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" could not have known how important this adage would become. The challenge of altering the health trajectories of poor lifestyle decisions for such behaviors as smoking, drinking and using illicit drugs, violence, dropping out of school, engagement in risky sexual behaviors and crime through prevention research has led to a new discipline, prevention science. Defining Prevention Science covers this emerging field of science: its goals, its conceptual and theoretical foundations, its methods and especially its utility. Not content to simply differentiate the field from its close allies: epidemiology, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, economics, the text explains how these many disciplines enhance each other at both research and intervention levels and how prevention science draws on these biological, behavioral and social sciences to create an innovative knowledge base that has provided cost-effective, evidence-based prevention interventions and policies. To this end, familiar developmental benchmarks are recast in prevention/health promotion context, from the crucial importance of adolescence in encountering and deterring high-risk behaviors to the risks and resiliencies of single-mother families. An international group of contributors offers current findings, up-to-date methods for effective evidence-based interventions and improvements in research technologies in these key areas: Physical, cognitive and emotional vulnerability across the life course. The roles of developmental influences in prevention. Intervention development, delivery and implementation. Bringing the intervention approach to research design. New directions in analytic methods. Cost analysis and policy implications. Advances in Prevention Science: Defining Prevention Science aims to inspire further refinements in the field and encourage communication among researchers in its own and related disciplines, including public health, epidemiology, psychology, and criminology. This is the first volume in the series, Advances in Prevention Science, that provides the framework for other volume that will focus on such issues as: Prevention Science in School Settings: Complex Relationships and Processes; Preventing Crime and Violence and The Prevention of Substance Use.

Synopsis The Alchemy of Disease by : John Whysner

Since the dawn of the industrial age, we have unleashed a bewildering number of potentially harmful chemicals. But out of this vast array, how do we identify the actual threats? What does it take to prove that a certain chemical causes cancer? How do we translate academic knowledge of the toxic effects of particular substances into understanding real-world health consequences? The science that answers these questions is toxicology. In The Alchemy of Disease, John Whysner offers an accessible and compelling history of toxicology and its key findings. He details the experiments and discoveries that revealed the causal connections between chemical exposures and diseases. Balancing clear accounts of groundbreaking science with human drama and public-policy relevance, Whysner describes key moments in the development of toxicology and their thorny social and political implications. The book features discussions of toxicological problems past and present, including DDT, cigarettes and other carcinogens, lead poisoning, fossil fuels, chemical warfare, pharmaceuticals—including opioids—and the efficacy of animal testing. Offering valuable insight into the science and politics of crucial public-health concerns, The Alchemy of Disease shows that toxicology’s task—pinpointing the chemical cause of an illness—is as compelling as any detective story.
