In 1939, playing for Ohio State, end Esco Sarkkinen made everyone's All-American team. From 1945 to 1979, he shaped dozens of other Buckeye All-Americans as coach under Woody Hayes. He also became a living legend in the annals of OSU football. After Esco died in 1998, author Bill Harper decided to put some of the stories of OSU football he had heard from Esco -- the two had become friends in the 1990s -- down on paper. The project grew from a few reminiscences to a full-blown book, a humorous and poignant memoir of Esco, as told in his own stories and anecdotes provided by such OSU greats as Jim Houston, Greg Lashutka, and many others.
