Synopsis Tools for Ideas by : Christian Gänshirt
Architects today must position themselves within an extremely wide-ranging field of qualifications. This makes it all the more important to have a fresh introduction to the field that makes up one of their core competences, the field of design. This introductory presentation describes and analyzes the theories, strategies, and tools of creative design for the purposes of practical work. With thoughtfulness and expertise, it opens the reader’s eyes to the processes that underlie design and demonstrates different ways of communicating about complex design work. The first section focuses on the much-discussed relationship between design and research, between architecture and the sciences. The second section describes basic design approaches, from Vitruvius and Alberti through Erwin Panofsky and Wolfgang Kemp to Otl Aicher and Vilém Flusser. The third and largest section presents the elementary tools of design, from gestures and words through drawings, models, and simulations to critique, all as instruments of creative design in architecture and its related fields.

Synopsis Conditional Design by : Anthony di Mari
Conditional design is the sequel to Operative Design. This book will further explore the operative in a more detailed, intentional, and perhaps functional manner. Spatially, the conditional is the result of the operative. It is not a blind result however. Both terms work together to satisfy a formal manipulation through a set of opportunities for elements such as connections and apertures.

Synopsis Introduction to Architecture by : Joseph Godlewski
Introduction to Architecture: Global Disciplinary Knowledge provides students with a holistic exploration of the history of architectural discourse. The anthology features select readings in architectural theory, which are supplemented by clear introductory remarks to help guide students through critical concepts and themes. The book expands the repertoire of traditional Euro-American based theory anthologies by presenting texts from an explicitly global perspective. It engages a diverse range of debates on the built environment throughout history and around the world. The collection addresses the what, how, and why of architecture and architectural theory, specifically addressing the following questions: What is architecture? What are the ideas behind some of the most significant buildings in history? How does architecture manifest cultural values and aspirations in different contexts? Why is all of this important in the first place? To answer these questions, the anthology offers students readings on architectural thought and theory from some of the most renowned and revered architects and theorists of their time. The text also provides students with case studies and images of exemplary buildings to help them connect the dots between theoretical concepts and constructed works of architecture. Designed to serve as a supplementary text, Introduction to Architecture is a cross-disciplinary anthology well suited for foundational courses in architectural history, architecture, theory of architecture, cultural studies, anthropology, and urban studies. An architectural theorist, historian, and practitioner, Joseph Godlewski earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in architectural history and theory from the University of California, Berkeley. He is an assistant professor at the Syracuse University School of Architecture, where he teaches courses in theory and design. His writing has been featured in various forums including CLOG, The Plan Journal, MONU, ArchDaily.com, Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review, and the book The Dissertation: An Architecture Student's Handbook. He's a member of the Global Architectural History Teaching Collaborative (GAHTC).

Synopsis An Architectural Approach to Level Design by : Christopher W. Totten
Explore Level Design through the Lens of Architectural and Spatial Experience Theory Written by a game developer and professor trained in architecture, An Architectural Approach to Level Design is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. It explores the principles of level design through the context and history of architecture, providing information useful to both academics and game development professionals. Understand Spatial Design Principles for Game Levels in 2D, 3D, and Multiplayer Applications The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. The author connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. Create Meaningful User Experiences in Your Games Bringing together topics in game design and architecture, this book helps designers create better spaces for their games. Software independent, the book discusses tools and techniques that designers can use in crafting their interactive worlds.

Synopsis Operative Design by : Anthony di Mari
The core idea for this book is the use of operative verbs as tools for designing space. These operative verbs abstract the idea of spatial formation to its most basic terms, allowing for an objective approach to create the foundation for subjective spatial design. Examples of these verbs are expand, inflate, nest, wist, lift, embed, merge and many more. Together they form a visual dictionary decoding the syntax of spatial verbs. The verbs are illustrated with three-dimensional diagrams and pictures of designs which show the verbs 'in action'. This approach was devised, tested, and applied to architectural studio instruction by Anthony Di Mari and Nora Yoo while teaching at Harvard University's Career Discovery Program in Architecture in 2010. As instructors and as recent graduates, they saw a need for this kind of catalogue from both sides - as a reference manual applicable to design students in all stages of their studies, as well as a teaching tool for instructors to help students understand the strong spatial potential of abstract operations.
