A systematic outline of the field of adaptive arrays is provided in this book, offering a current overview of the large number of original contributions contained in the technical literature. This is the completely revised English version of the original Romanian edition. The 600 or more works consulted have enabled the authors to present topics from the earliest sources up to the latest developments in the field. Although the emphasis is mainly on the practical aspects, also included are design elements, technical and technological considerations, which make the book useful to a wide range of specialists. Besides the conventional adaptive processing techniques, nonconventional approaches are included such as reactively controlled arrays, adaptive arrays with optical processing, arrays used in frequency hopping communications systems, etc. Special attention is paid to recent applications of adaptive arrays, with a complete chapter devoted to superresolution and direction of arrival estimation. The book is self-contained, in that any person with a background in electrical engineering can follow the computations. Synopsis An Introduction to Adaptive Arrays by :
A tutorial introduction to adaptive arrays is presented via analysis of linear arrays with adaptive control loops of the Applebaum analog type, which derive weighting adjustment control from the correlations between element signals, i.e., on the basis of the covariance matrix of the set of system inputs. Phase conjugacy, cross-correlation interferometers, and the IF phase- cancellation principle were reviewed, and a simple two-element array with a single adaptive control loop was analyzed. The analysis was based on reduction to a type-O follower servo equivalent circuit and includes transient behavior, bandwidth effects, and the Applebaum hard-limiter modification. The analysis then proceeded to a K-element linear array with K adaptive control loops. The system analysis consisted of a Q-matrix transformation into orthonormal eigenvector space, and interpreting the transformation in terms of an orthogonal beam-forming network, similar in principle to a Butler matrix network. The system was thus converted into an equivalent 'orthonormal, ' adaptive control- loop network to which the type-O follower servo analysis can again be applied. The Q-matrix transformation network produced a set of K orthogonal, normalized, eigenvector beams whose output powers are proportional to the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix. These beams were used as the basis of a convenient expression for calculating the time-dependent output pattern function for the array.

Synopsis Advanced Concepts in Adaptive Signal Processing by : W. Kenneth Jenkins
Although adaptive filtering and adaptive array processing began with research and development efforts in the late 1950's and early 1960's, it was not until the publication of the pioneering books by Honig and Messerschmitt in 1984 and Widrow and Stearns in 1985 that the field of adaptive signal processing began to emerge as a distinct discipline in its own right. Since 1984 many new books have been published on adaptive signal processing, which serve to define what we will refer to throughout this book as conventional adaptive signal processing. These books deal primarily with basic architectures and algorithms for adaptive filtering and adaptive array processing, with many of them emphasizing practical applications. Most of the existing textbooks on adaptive signal processing focus on finite impulse response (FIR) filter structures that are trained with strategies based on steepest descent optimization, or more precisely, the least mean square (LMS) approximation to steepest descent. While literally hundreds of archival research papers have been published that deal with more advanced adaptive filtering concepts, none of the current books attempt to treat these advanced concepts in a unified framework. The goal of this new book is to present a number of important, but not so well known, topics that currently exist scattered in the research literature. The book also documents some new results that have been conceived and developed through research conducted at the University of Illinois during the past five years.
