Synopsis An Important Collection of Paintings and Bronzes by Modern Masters of American and European Art by : C. W. Kraushaar Art Galleries

Excerpt from An Important Collection of Paintings and Bronzes by Modern Masters of American and European Art: On View at the C. W. Kraushaar Art Galleries, 680 Fifth Avenue, New York, December 4th to 30th, 1922 In this exhibition Mr. Kraushaar has done an uncommon, fine thing. He has defied that efficiency devil, the classifier. He has brought into this collection the pictures of good paint ers without respect to the uniforms of the regi ments in which, for the sake of economy, these organizers of artists have placed them. He has done a very fine thing in art in neglecting the rule for its exception. Indeed, if this exhibition was without anything else in its favor, it would remain of tremendous importance as a piece of destructive criticism. The exceptions to the rule in governments are criminals, and perhaps justly punished as such. The exceptions to the rule in art are artists, and of an estimable value to the world. In art, ultimately, they are the only facts worth bothering about. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Jerome Myers: the Ash Can Artist of the Lower East Side by : Robert L. Gambone

The Eight (Ash Can School), artists who joined ranks in 1908 to challenge the conservative dominance of the National Academy, does not count Jerome Myers among its number. Yet the pioneering work done by Myers places him in the forefront of contemporary realist artists. His focused concentration depicting the environment and inhabitants of New York Citys Lower East Side immigrant neighborhood catapults Jerome Myers into the forefront of artists who boldly sought out expressions of contemporary life. Myerss work allows us to understand these immigrant neighborhoods in a way that would not be possible today if his art did not exist. This book examines Myerss biography and art in detail, establishing not only his preeminant claim to a position at the forefront of the Eight, but also his role as artist-historian of a bygone neighborhood and the positive life of immigrants who lived there.

Synopsis The Smith College Museum of Art by : Smith College. Museum of Art

Smith College art professors Davis and Leshko showcase 100 paintings and sculptures from their institution's vaunted collection, encompassing Americans from Gilbert Stuart to Louise Nevelson and Europeans from Corot to Henry Moore. In the introduction, how and why Smith became steward of such a fine body of work is ascribed to the school's high-minded mission and its generous alumni donors. The rest of the book is divided into two sections, one American and the other European. Each individual full-color reproduction is accompanied by an informative one-page essay and a brief reading list. During several years of renovations at Smith, the items featured in this book are traveling to diverse sites, which should increase the book's appeal. 118 colour & 1 b/w illustrations
