This volume focusses on four main topics: structure functions, tests of quantum chromodynamics, physics at the highest Q2 and p2T, and high energy scattering and diffraction. Comprehensive review articles on hadronic and photon structure, lepton-parton and parton-parton physics as well as future experimental opportunities are presented, together with a special lecture on HERA's legacy after the first decade of operation.

Experts on elementary-particle physics, both theorists and experimentalists, met to present their latest results on the various aspects of HERA physics, specifically, the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA and the collaborations at LEP and the Tevatron were presented. The topics included: proton structure function; polarized ep scattering; final states in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), with special emphasis on jet production at low x, power corrections in DIS, soft particle production, and instanton effects; photon structure function; photoproduction of jets and hadrons; heavy-flavour and charmonium production; elastic and diffractive ep scattering; and new physics at HERA.

This book is the result of a broad-based and in-depth study of high energy physics commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. This year-long study was initiated in the early 1994, in the wake of the cancellation of the SSC, and is meant to complement the report of the Drell HEPAP subpanel, charged with providing a vision for the future of the field. The DPF study of high energy physics was organized on the basis of the working groups, each led by a number of co-conveners chosen among established leaders in the various subspecialties in the field. These conveners, in turn, organized their working groups by inviting other active workers in the discipline to participate and gathered further input from the community by holding a variety of specialized meetings and workshops. This book contains the final reports of the 11 working groups assembled for the study, along with an extended overview and executive summary by the editors.

These proceedings present the most up-to-date status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics such as structure function measurements and phenomenology, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in leptonproton scattering.

The proceedings of the Lake Louise Winter Institute for 1998 deal with strong interactions. This includes the jet physics and fragmentation functions as needed in high energy collider physics, deep inelastic scattering to study the structure functions of nucleons, and finally physics with the production and hadronization of quark-gluon plasma at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Both the theoretical developments and experimental data were presented with the intent of establishing their relationship and finding new directions of study.

This book has been prepared to celebrate the 65th birthday of Gabriele Veneziano and his retirement from CERN in September 2007. This reti- ment certainly will not mark the end of his extraordinary scienti?c career (in particular, he will remain on the permanent sta? of the Coll` ege de France in Paris), but we believe that this important step deserves a special celebration, and an appropriate recognition of his monumental contribution to physics. Our initial idea of preparing a volume of Selected papers of Professor Gabriele Veneziano, possibly with some added commentary, was dismissed when we realized that this format of book, very popular in former times, has become redundant today because of the full “digitalization” of all important physical journals, and their availability online in the electronic archives. We have thus preferred an alternative (and unconventional, but probably more e?ective) form of celebrating Gabriele’s birthday: a collection of new papers written by his main collaborators and friends on the various aspects of th- retical physics that have been the object of his research work, during his long and fruitful career.
