Synopsis No Benefit by : Lawrence D. Weiss

The private health insurance industry is unable to provide nearly 40 million Americans with basic health care. Relying on data from a wide range of publications about this secretive industry, Lawrence D. Weiss investigates the causes of the industry's problems and analyzes the social effects of the growing crisis. The causes include excessive overhead costs, widespread inefficiency, and exemptions from antimonopoly regulations; the social effects include small businesses' inabilities to provide adequate coverage for their employees, the reluctance of many carriers to insure certain social groups, and the disproportionate burden on minorities. Addressing these dilemmas, Lawrence D. Weiss offers a timely and important analysis of the health insurance crisis in America.

Synopsis Life Insurance for the American Family by : Ed Kelly

Ed Kelly is on a mission to help American families. They are grossly underinsured with their current life insurance coverage, and something must be done about it, soon. In this book, Ed exposes the 10 myths that most consumers and their current advisors hold about life insurance. Once these myths are dispelled, then the mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, insurance agents and financial planners can all move on to address the truth about Time Diversification and Tax Diversification. This book is a call for Americans to take responsibility for themselves and the real risks we all face. While most people can think of only one reason to own life insurance (to provide money for a survivor), Ed shows there are actually 1000 reasons to own life insurance, from cradle to grave. Many of these are driven by the tax advantages inherent in a life insurance policy. His mission is to drive you to a better conversation and a better meeting with your financial professional. This book will help you see life insurance from a new philosophical and practical perspective.

Synopsis America's Uninsured Crisis by : Institute of Medicine

When policy makers and researchers consider potential solutions to the crisis of uninsurance in the United States, the question of whether health insurance matters to health is often an issue. This question is far more than an academic concern. It is crucial that U.S. health care policy be informed with current and valid evidence on the consequences of uninsurance for health care and health outcomes, especially for the 45.7 million individuals without health insurance. From 2001 to 2004, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued six reports, which concluded that being uninsured was hazardous to people's health and recommended that the nation move quickly to implement a strategy to achieve health insurance coverage for all. The goal of this book is to inform the health reform policy debateâ€"in 2009â€"with an up-to-date assessment of the research evidence. This report addresses three key questions: What are the dynamics driving downward trends in health insurance coverage? Is being uninsured harmful to the health of children and adults? Are insured people affected by high rates of uninsurance in their communities?

Synopsis U. S. Insurance Industries After the 2007-2009 Financial Crisis by : Johnson B. Powell

The U.S. life and property/casualty (P/C) insurance industries wrote over $1 trillion in total premiums in 2011 and play an important role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the economy. Concerns about the oversight of the insurance industry arose during the 2007-2009 financial crisis, when one of the largest U.S. holding companies that had substantial insurance operations, American International Group, Inc. (AIG), suffered large losses. These losses were driven in large part by activities conducted by a non-insurance affiliate, AIG Financial Products, but also included securities lending activity undertaken by some of its life insurance companies which created liquidity issues for some insurers. The losses threatened to bankrupt the company, and AIG was one of the largest recipients of assistance by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the federal government under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) set up during the crisis. This book examines any effects of the financial crisis on the insurance industry and policyholders, and addresses what is known about how the financial crisis affected the insurance industry and policyholders, and the types of actions that have been taken since the crisis to help prevent or mitigate potential negative effects of future economic downturns on insurance companies and their policyholders.
