Synopsis American Police Motorcycles by : Cristina Berna
Police officers have used motorcycles since the early 20th century primarily for the enforcement of traffic laws and as escort vehicles Harley-Davidson says Detroit, Michigan as being the first purchaser of police motorcycles in 1908. Evanston, Illinois also started using motor cyles in 1908, and the Portland Police Bureau had a police officer who used his personal motorcycle to patrol the city as early as 1909. The maneuverability of the motorcycle on crowded streets offer advantages that larger, more traditional police vehicles do not have. Motorcycles can access routes unavailable to other motor vehicles, such as narrow streets and footpaths. Police motorcycles are also used in police escorts for parades, funeral processions, motorcades, Olympic torch relays, and other events. We honor all service members on Memorial Day (last Monday of May) and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.

Synopsis Hiroshige Famous Places of Naniwa (Osaka) by : Cristina Berna
This book shows the 10 Famous Views Of Naniwa (Osaka) by Hiroshige published in 1834. They are unusual in that they show markets with merchants negotiating. The 8 Views is a Chinese artistic and literary theme developed already in the 10th century and then transposed into Japanese culture, where it developed its own independent expression. Print artist Utagawa Hiroshige as many other Japanese artists took up the issue of 8 Views of Omi and again as other Japanese artists he expanded the theme into 8 Views of Kanazawa, 8 Views of Edo Environs and other locations. To give some background there are many other prints included especially about rice but also fishing and transportation, and cultural activities afforded by the wealth accumulated by the merchants. It is possible to travel to see the same sites today.
