Herbert Hoover and Poland is the first of a series of documentaries stemming largely from the Hoover Institution archives and published by Hoover Institution Press. Synopsis The United States and Poland by : Piotr Stefan Wandycz

The United States and Poland adds a new dimension to the scholarship of America's international relations. Piotr Wandycz presents a comprehensive picture of the changing relationships between the United States and Poland over two hundred years. This work is, as Wandycz writes, both a survey and a synthesis. Because he believes that an understanding of the history of Poland is necessary in order to appreciate the complex nature of its involvement with the United States, he provides a thorough analysis of Poland's internal development, concentrating on the twentieth century. He also carefully places American-Polish history in the broader context of changing East-West relations. Finally, he speculates on the future between the two countries as detente unfolds and surprising happenings like the election of a Polish Pope occur. Ultimately, Wandycz acknowledges, the American-Polish relationship has been one-sided, even more so than is normal in contacts between great and small powers. "One must not imagine," he writes, "that Poland has been on the minds of American foreign policy makers consistently...but if one thinks of Poland in the context of East Central Europe, her significance increases dramatically." This book provides a necessary history and evaluation of a nation state once dominant in Europe and now searching for an appropriate role.

Synopsis I Saw Poland Betrayed: An American Ambassador Reports To The American People by : Arthur Bliss Lane

Arthur Bliss Lane was a hugely experienced American Diplomat, having worked all over the world before his posting to the Polish Government in 1944. The Polish Government was then in exile in London and he gained a great deal of respect for the Polish leadership. He followed them back to their homeland in 1945 as the Poles sought to set-up a democratic state from the smashed debris of years of Nazi domination. What transpired was a new form of despotism in Soviets, in this memoir Bliss gives a detailed history of Poland from 1944-1947, the post-war border changes and the Soviet creation of a puppet state in Poland after WWII. In Bliss’ view the Poles were hung out to dry by the Allies after 1945 and his memoir provides compelling evidence of this.

Synopsis Herbert Hoover and World Peace by : Lee Nash

Herbert Hoover and World Peace summarizes Hoover's career-long efforts to preserve peace in the world and to help America avoid unnecessary wars, from his opposition to our entry into World War I to his proposed — and rejected — Cold War strategy, which would have avoided the Vietnam War. Personal experiences in the Boxer Rebellion in China and helping to feed Belgium during World War I, coupled with his early Quaker nurture, that sensitized him to war-related tragedies. These essays illustrate the varied ways in which Hoover expressed and implemented his commitment to world peace, as humanitarian, advisor, cabinet member, president, citizen, and writer. No other president was so consistent and thoughtful on matters of world peace.
