Synopsis American Canyon by : Amarnath Ravva

Blending myth with interviews and first-person narrative, California-based writer Amarnath Ravva's American Canyon uses prose, documentary footage and still photos to recount the fragmented and ever-evolving story of one person's apprehension of the ghosts of history. Written from a series of video notes taken over a period of ten years, this narrative of a son's love for his mother and the ritual he performs for her takes us from California to Rameswaram, the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. It is a meditation on the moments in history that placed him in front of a small bright fire, a lament for the continual loss of those who, by remembering, let us know who we are. Ravva's American Canyon has been described by poet and author Kevin Killian as "a complex reworking of memoir form, using the tools of poetry remelted, as in Vulcan's forge, to slash away at the ghosts and ghouls of conventional prose usage. The new journalism, Ravva-style, stimulates the nerve endings with its alternately lush and spare renditions of some spectacular settings..." Ravva has given readings and performed at LACMA, Machine Project, the MAK Center at the Schindler House, New Langton Arts, the Hammer Museum, USC, Pomona, CalArts and the Sorbonne.

Synopsis I Am the Grand Canyon by : Stephen Hirst

I Am the Grand Canyon is the story of the Havasupai people. From their origins among the first group of Indians to arrive in North America some 20,000 years ago to their epic struggle to regain traditional lands taken from them in the nineteenth century, the Havasupai have a long and colorful history. The story of this tiny tribe once confined to a toosmall reservation depicts a people with deep cultural ties to the land, both on their former reservation below the rim of the Grand Canyon and on the surrounding plateaus. In the spring of 1971, the federal government proposed incorporating still more Havasupai land into Grand Canyon National Park. At hearings that spring, Havasupai Tribal Chairman Lee Marshall rose to speak. "I heard all you people talking about the Grand Canyon," he said. "Well, you're looking at it. I am the Grand Canyon!" Marshall made it clear that Havasu Canyon and the surrounding plateau were critical to the survival of his people; his speech laid the foundation for the return of thousands of acres of Havasupai land in 1975. I Am the Grand Canyon is the story of a heroic people who refused to back down when facing overwhelming odds. They won, and today the Havasupai way of life quietly continues in the Grand Canyon and on the surrounding plateaus.

Synopsis Dog-Friendly Trails for All Seasons in California's Foothills and the Sierra Nevada by : Debbi Preston

This book is a follow-up to 48 Dog-Friendly Trails in Californias Foothills and the Sierra Nevada, published by AuthorHouse in 2008. In keeping with the first books structure, there are four trailheads described for each month of the year to encourage year-round outdoor excursions. In some cases, there are multiple trail choices from a single trailhead so everyone can find an outing suitable to their groups individual needs. Trails are all dog friendly, with some providing off-leash opportunities. Many of the trails are also suitable for joggers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. A table at the back of the book identifies the usage for each trail. You will also find information as to which trails feature great views, swimming, family access, fishing, and other activities. Listening to readers feedback from the first book, with the new book the focus is in finding more obscure trails so even the most experienced enthusiast will find new places to explore. There are also maps for trails with difficult descriptions. Trails are still rated from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), but with this book you will find more trails with a 4 and 5 rating. Still there are easy options for each month, but overall there are more challenging opportunities.
