Synopsis Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability by : Kostas J. Spyrou
This book is a selection of research papers presented in 5 consecutive International Ship Stability Workshops (ISSWs) managed by the STAB International Standing Committee in the period 2013–2019 (2013 Brest, 2014 Kuala Lumpur, 2016 Stockholm, 2017 Belgrade, 2019 Helsinki). ISSWs are a long-standing and authoritative series of international technical meetings in the field of stability of ships and ocean vehicles. The book is the fourth of a line of books started 20 years ago and having the main title “Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability”. It focuses on the state-of-the-art ship stability criteria and covers topics such as ship dynamics in waves, roll damping, stability of damaged ships, model experiments, and effect of stability requirements on ship design and operation. This book helps the readers to understand the current state of the art in the field of ship stability and see how this comes into the development of modern criteria of ship design and operation.

Synopsis International Code on Intact Stability, 2008 by : International Maritime Organization
The International Code on Intact Stability 2008 (2008 IS Code), presents mandatory and recommendatory stability criteria and other measures for ensuring the safe operation of ships, to minimize the risk to such ships, to the personnel on board and to the environment. The 2008 IS Code took effect on 1 July 2010. The 2008 IS Code features:a full update of the previous IS Code; criteria based on the best state-of-the-art concepts available at the time they were developed, taking into account sound design and engineering principles and experience gained from operating ships; influences on intact stability such as the dead ship condition, wind on ships with large windage area, rolling characteristics and severe seas. This publication also presents Explanatory Notes to the 2008 IS Code, intended to provide administrations and the shipping industry with specific guidance to assist in the uniform interpretation and application of the intact stability requirements of the 2008 IS Code.

Synopsis International Organizations and the Law of the Sea by : Barbara Kwiatkowska
Now in its 14th year, the "NILOS Documentary Yearbook" provides the reader with an excellent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by organizations, organs and bodies of the United Nations system. Documents of the UN General Assembly, Meeting of State Parties to the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention, CLCS, ISBA, ITLOS, Follow-Up to the UN Straddling Fish Stocks and Small Island States Conferences, Panama Canal, ECOSOC, UNEP and UNCTAD are included first, followed by the documents of FAO, IAEA, IMO, UNESCO/IOC. As in the previous volumes, documents which were issued in the course of 1998 are reproduced, while other relevant documents are listed. The "NILOS Documentary Yearbook" has proved to be of invaluable assistance in facilitating access by the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation. The entry of the 1992 UN Law of the Sea Convention into force on 16th November 1994 and of the Part XI Agreement on 28 July, 1996, and progress in the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, make continuation of this assistance of particular significance in the years to come. "Volume 14" contains Special Report by Editor-in-Chief Barbara Kwiatkowska on The Law-of-the-Sea-Related Cases in the International Court of Justice During the Presidency of Judge Stephen M. Schwebel (1997-2000). It explores the unique role of the ICJ as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations in the development of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, in the context of an ongoing follow-up to the Overall Review and Appraisal of the UNCED Agenda 21. The members of the Yearbook's Advisory Board are: Judges Abdul Koroma and Shigeru Oda of the ICJ, Judges Thomas Mensah, Dolliver Nelson and Tullio Treves of the ITLOS, as well as Rosalie Balkin, Edward Brown, Lee Kimball, Bernard Oxman and Shabtai Rosenne.

Synopsis Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Offshore Supply Vessels 2006 by : International Maritime Organization
These Guidelines have been developed for the design and construction of new offshore supply vessels with a view to promoting the safety of such vessels and their personnel, recognizing the unique design features and service characteristics of these vessels. Furthermore, these Guidelines provide a standard of safety equivalent to the relevant requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, as amended, and in particular to the stability criteria of the Code on Intact Stability for all Types of Ships Covered by IMO Instruments (IS Code), as amended. Synopsis Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability and Capsizing in Waves by : Marcelo Almeida Santos Neves
During the last decade significant progress has been made in the field of ship stability. Yet in spite of the progress made, numerous scientific and practical challenges still exist with regard to the accurate prediction of extreme motion and capsize dynamics for intact and damaged vessels, the probabilistic nature of extreme events, criteria that properly reflect the physics and operational safety of an intact or damaged vessel, and ways to provide relevant information on safe ship handling to ship operators. This book provides a comprehensive review of the above issues through the selection of representative papers presented at the unique series of international workshops and conferences on ship stability held between 2000 and 2009. The editorial committee has selected papers for this book from the following events: STAB 2000 Conference (Launceston, Tasmania), 5th Stability Workshop (Trieste, 2001), 6th Stability Workshop (Long Island, 2002), STAB 2003 Conference (Madrid), 7th Stability Workshop (Shanghai, 2004), 8th Stability Workshop (Istanbul, 2005), STAB 2006 Conference (Rio de Janeiro), 9th Stability Workshop (Hamburg, 2007), 10th Stability Workshop (Daejeon, 2008), and STAB 2009 Conference (St. Petersburg). The papers have been clustered around the following themes: Stability Criteria, Stability of the Intact Ship, Parametric Rolling, Broaching, Nonlinear Dynamics, Roll Damping, Probabilistic Assessment of Ship Capsize, Environmental Modelling, Damaged Ship Stability, CFD Applications, Design for Safety, Naval Vessels, and Accident Investigations.
