Charles Kingsley was a 19th century British novelist. Kingsley became a minister before becoming a Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge. Kingsley often used his writing to champion social issues. This novel covers the years 1848 to 1856 in the life of Charles Kingsley. The work covers the social and industrial side of the history of these years. The novel was written in sympathy with the Chartist movement, in which Carlyle is introduced as one of the personages. Alton Locke gives an insight into the work Kingsley was doing and exposes the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and the trials and tribulations of agricultural laborers.
