This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the two workshops held at the 14th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Multi-Agent Systems, PRIMA 2011, held in Wollongong, Australia, in November. The workshops were, Workshop on Agent Based Simulation for a Sustainable Society (ABSSS 2011) and International Workshop on Multi-Agent Smart Computing (MASmart 2011). The 8 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions. The papers cover topics from agent based simulation for a sustainable society and on multi-agent smart computing.

Intermodal Freight Transportation conceptualizes intermodal transport as a set of physical, logical, financial and contractual flows, examining the barriers that impact intermodal freight services and the resulting performance variables. Decision makers in large scale interconnected network systems require simulation models for decision support. The behaviour of these systems is determined by many actors, situated in a dynamic, multi-actor, multi-objective and multi-level environment. How can such systems be modelled and how can the socio-technical complexity be captured? Agent-based modelling is a proven approach to handle this challenge. This book provides a practical introduction to agent-based modelling of socio-technical systems, based on a methodology that has been developed at TU Delft and which has been deployed in a large number of case studies. The book consists of two parts: the first presents the background, theory and methodology as well as practical guidelines and procedures for building models. In the second part this theory is applied to a number of case studies, where for each model the development steps are presented extensively, preparing the reader for creating own models.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 20th International Workshop on Multi-Agent-Based Simulation, MABS 2020, held in Auckland, New Zealand, in May 2020 collocated with 19th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS 2020). Due to COVID-19 the workshop has been held online. The 9 revised full papers included in this volume were carefully selected from 11 submissions. The workshop focused on finding efficient solutions to model complex social systems, in such areas as economics, management, organizational and social sciences in general and much more.

We are increasingly seeing computer systems which are expected to function without operator intervention. This is perhaps acceptable for running computer networks or traffic lights; however, we are now seeing computer systems deployed to qualitatively influence human judgments such as rulings on legal disputes or fitness for work to evaluate disability benefits. In keeping with the precautionary principle, it is important that those who are developing this capability — technologists and scientists — think through its potential implications.The aim of this book is to explore the technological and social and implications of computers and robots becoming increasingly ‘aware’ of their environment and the people in it, and their being increasingly ‘self-aware’ of their own existence within it.The wide-ranging scope of the text covers three different angles of the concept of ‘the computer after me’: (1) the next generation of computationally powerful aware systems; (2) systems in which the computer is aware of qualitatively impact human concerns such as law, health and rules; and (3) computers and robots which are aware of themselves.

The book consists of 29 extended chapters which have been selected and invited from the submissions to the 1st International Conference on Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Applications (ICCSAMA 2013) held on 9-10 May, 2013 in Warsaw, Poland. The book is organized into five parts, which are: Advanced Optimization Methods and Their Applications, Queuing Theory and Applications, Computational Methods for Knowledge Engineering, Knowledge Engineering with Cloud and Grid Computing, and Logic Based Methods for Decision Making and Data Mining, respectively. INTELLCOMM 2004 received 112 paper submissions from 28 countries. From these, 24 were accepted, and are included in this proceedings.
