The West African Jews of the Diaspora are proud to announce our very first Friday Night Siddur. This siddur marks the first of many other works pending on the horizon. What makes this siddur unique is that we are celebrating our rich history and geological foot prints as Jews, leading up to our heritage in the American diaspora (the legacies of F.S. Cherry, Williams Saunders Crowdy, Rabbi Ford, WA Matthew, Haiyim White, Rabbi Tate, Rabbi Levi benLevi, Rabbi Eliezer Brooks and others of blessed memory). This siddur has a format that is not found in any other siddurim thus far, having a linear Hebrew, with English transliteration (phonetically written according to our traditions) and an English translation on the same page. This siddur has documented some of our rich and exclusive traditions that have been passed down by our great rabbanan and elders, which are supported by halakhic sources. Because of the format, our siddur is user friendly for anyone. It doesn't matter which level of Hebrew reading or comprehension a person may find themselves. Another milestone in history! We are proud to announce that we have created the complete Shabbath & Weekday siddur (prayer book) in celebration of the 100th year celebration of our communities. This siddur includes the customs of our respective community, with halakhic explanations of prayer and its rituals. It also includes illustrations for prayer and tying tefillin. In addition, this prayer book is suited for readers of multiple levels, having linear Hebrew to English transliteration and an English translation on the same page, making it easy for those who are still learning or interested in learning Hebrew to follow. We pride ourselves on serving our respective community and hope that this siddur will bring healing, inspiration, success and refinement to all Israel everywhere, here and abroad. We anticipate publishing more resources for our respective congregations, in hopes that it will allow for education, growth and continuity of our legacy for future generations to come.

The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

This book analyzes the different conceptions of authenticity that are behind conflicts over who and what should be recognized as authentically Jewish. Although the concept of authenticity has been around for several centuries, it became a central focus for Jews since existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre raised the question in the 1940s. Building on the work of Sartre, later Jewish thinkers, philosophers, anthropologists, and cultural theorists, the book offers a model of Jewish authenticity that seeks to balance history and tradition, creative freedom and innovation, and the importance of recognition among different groups within an increasingly multicultural Jewish community. Author Stuart Z. Charmé explores how debates over authenticity and struggles for recognition are a key to understanding a wide range of controversies between Orthodox and liberal Jews, Zionist and diaspora Jews, white Jews and Jews of color, as well as the status of intermarried and messianic Jews, and the impact of Jewish genetics. In addition, it discusses how and when various cultural practices and traditions such as klezmer music, Israeli folk dance, Jewish yoga and meditation, and others are recognized as authentically Jewish, or not.
