Subject As has been said in the introduction to the previous volumes, this biblio graphy aims at recording all books and articles of scholarly value which relate to the history of the printed book, to the history of the arts, crafts, techniques and equipment, and of the economic, social and cultural envi ronment, involved in its production, distribution, conservation, and descrip tion. Of course, the ideal of a complete coverage is nearly impossible to at tain. However, it is the policy of this publication to include missing items as VIII INTRODUCTION much as possible in the forthcoming volumes. The same applies to coun tries newly added to the bibliography.

While the academic world devoted to literary study has been absorbed with new and distinct forms of literary criticism, bibliography has received scant attention--much less than in former times when it was understood as more than just an aid to research. Enormous changes have taken place in enumerative bibliography over the past thirty years, especially with the widespread use of computers, but these changes have gone unrecognized as bibliography has gone unappreciated. This work is a collection of essays concentrating exclusively on bibliography and its uses in the academic world, especially in literature, folklore, language, and linguistics. The book begins with a discussion of what bibliography is, what it does, and how to create the optimum bibliography. Other subjects include bibliography and postcolonialism, critical theory and bibliography in cross-disciplinary environments, issues and problems with tools for feminist and women's studies scholars in literature, strategies for the incorporation of pluridisciplinary work, bibliographical databases and databased bibliographies, and ideas for the future of the MLA International Bibliography.

The subject of stage directions in 'Hamlet', those brief semiotic codes that are embellished by historical, theatrical, and cultural considerations, produces a rigorous examination in the fifteen essays contained in this collection. No longer seen as a privileged arena for select dramatists and elite courtiers, the Restoration theatre is revealed in all of its tumult, energy and conflict. The fourteen newly-commissioned essays examine the theatre, paying attention to major playwrights such as Dryden, Wycherly and Congreve and also to more minor works and to plays by the first professional female dramatists. The book begins with chapters on the performance of the drama in its own time, on theatres, acting and staging, and continues with the main dramatic genres and themes, with a final chapter on the critical history of the drama. The volume also includes a thorough chronology and biographies and bibliographies of dramatists.
