Synopsis Advances in Urethane by : Kurt C. Frisch
Flexible polyurenthane foams of all types are a unique group of plastics materials, characterized by the fact that a multitude of different sets of properties can be obtained by varying the levels of a relatively small number of base components in the formulations. Different foam grades, primarily characterized by density and hardness, can be obtained by changing the ratio between base polyol, polymer polyol, water, blowing agent, isocyanate and other components. It is not uncommon for foam producers in industrialized countries to manufacture more than one hundred different foam grades based on these basic chemicals, plus the ancillary chemicals needed for optimized processing. This has always made flexible polyurethane foams a highly suitable candidate for correlating these variations in the formulations with the resulting properties in a mathematical way, aimed at predicting the properties as accurately as possible, fine-tuning existing grades or designing new foam grades. This book discusses the methodology for obtaining meaningful equations for correlating properties with formulation variables and other influencing factors

Synopsis Telechelic Polymers by : Eric J. Goethals
This first-of-its-kind publication reviews the most impor-tant literature on the synthesis, properties, and applications of telechelic polymers. Written by a group of internationally known ex-perts in the field, this text contains a review table which allows the reader to search for given polymers with given end groups. Over 1,250 references are listed, covering primary and review articles as well as patents. Chapters include the preparation of telechelics by stepwise polymerization, anionic polymerization, radical polymer-ization, cationic polymerization, ring-opening polymerization and controlled polymer degradation. Polyols for the polyurethane pro-duction are described, as well as halato-telechelic polymers. Also, a more theoretical contribution on the physical properties of net-works formed from telechelic polymers is provided.

Synopsis Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Volume 1 by : Kirk-Othmer
The fifth edition of the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology builds upon the solid foundation of the previous editions, which have proven to be a mainstay for chemists, biochemists, and engineers at academic, industrial, and government institutions since publication of the first edition in 1949. The new edition includes necessary adjustments and modernisation of the content to reflect changes and developments in chemical technology. Presenting a wide scope of articles on chemical substances, properties, manufacturing, and uses; on industrial processes, unit operations in chemical engineering; and on fundamentals and scientific subjects related to the field. The Encyclopedia describes established technology along with cutting edge topics of interest in the wide field of chemical technology, whilst uniquely providing the necessary perspective and insight into pertinent aspects, rather than merely presenting information. * Set begins publication in March 2004 * Over 1000 articles in 27 volumes * More than 600 new or updated articles Reviews from the previous edition: "The most indispensable reference in the English language on all aspects of chemical technology...the best reference of its kind". Chemical Engineering News, 1992 "Overall, ECT is well written and cleanly edited, and no library claiming to be a useful resource for chemical engineering professionals should be without it." Nicholas Basta, Chemical Engineering, December 1992

Synopsis Composite Materials by : Krishan K. Chawla
Composite Materials Science and Engineering focuses on the structure-property relationships in composite materials. A detailed description is given of how microstructure of different fibers (such as glass, Kevlar, polyethylene, carbon, boron, silicon, carbide, alumina etc.) controls their characteristics. The important role of interface in composite materials is discussed. Up to date information about the recent advances in polymer matrix-, metal matrix-, and ceramic matrix composites is provided. Micro- and macromechanical aspects of composite materials as well as their strength, fracture, and design aspects are described in detail - always emphasizing the basic theme of how the structure controls the resultant properties. Extensive use is made of micrographs and line drawings to bring home to the reader the importance of structure-property relationships in composites. Throughout the book, examples are given from practical applications of composites in various fields. Extensive references to the literature, general bibliography, as well as practice problems are provided. The book is intended for undergraduates (senior level) and first year graduate students as well as the practicing engineer/scientist in the industry.
