Synopsis Advances in Mechanics of Microstructured Media and Structures by : Francesco dell'Isola
This book is an homage to the pioneering works of E. Aero and G. Maugin in the area of analytical description of generalized continua. It presents a collection of contributions on micropolar, micromorphic and strain gradient media, media with internal variables, metamaterials, beam lattices, liquid crystals, and others. The main focus is on wave propagation, stability problems, homogenization, and relations between discrete and continuous models.

Synopsis Mechanics of Microstructured Materials by : Helmut J. Böhm
The work deals with the thermomechanical mechanical behavior of microstructured materials, which has attracted considerable interest from both the academic and the industrial research communities. The past decade has witnessed major progress in the development of analytical as well as numerical modeling approaches and of experimental methods in this field. Considerable research efforts have been aimed at obtaining microstructure-property correlations and at studying the damage and failure behavior of microstructured materials. The book combines an overview of important analytical and numerical modeling approaches in continuum micromechanics and is aimed at academic and industrial researchers, such as materials scientists, mechanical engineers, and applied physicists, who are working or planning to work in the field of mechanics of microstructured materials such as composites, metals and ceramics.

Synopsis Continuous Media with Microstructure 2 by : Bettina Albers
This book presents research advances in the field of Continuous Media with Microstructure and considers the three complementary pillars of mechanical sciences: theory, research and computational simulation. It focuses on the following problems: thermodynamic and mathematical modeling of materials with extensions of classical constitutive laws, single and multicomponent media including modern multifunctional materials, wave propagation, multiscale and multiphysics processes, phase transformations, and porous, granular and composite materials. The book presents the proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Continuous Media with Microstructure, which was held in 2015 in Łagów, Poland, in memory of Prof. Krzysztof Wilmański.

Synopsis Sixty Shades of Generalized Continua by : Holm Altenbach
In this book, well-known scientists discuss modern aspects of generalized continua, in order to better understand modern materials and advanced structures. They possess complicated internal structure, and it requires the development of new approaches to model such structures and new effects caused by it. This book combines fundamental contributions in honor of Victor Eremeyev and his 60th birthday.

Synopsis The Complete Works of Gabrio Piola: Volume II by : Francesco dell'Isola
This book presents the second volume of Piola’s original Italian text together with the English-language translation and comments, showing convincingly that Gabrio Piola’s work must still be regarded as a modern theory. Gabrio Piola’s work has had an enormous impact on the development of applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. As such, a committee of scientific experts took it upon themselves to translate his complete works. In a second step, they commented on Piola’s work and compared it to modern theories in mechanics in order to stress Piola’s impact on modern science and prove and confirm that he achieved significant milestones in applied mathematics.

Synopsis Advances in Doublet Mechanics by : Mauro Ferrari
The recently proposed, fully multi-scale theory of doublet mechanics offers unprecented opportunities to reconcile the discrete and continuum representations of solids while maintaining a simple analytical format and full compatibility with lattice dynamics and continuum mechanics. In this monograph, a self-contained account of the state of the art in doublet mechanics is presented. Novel results in the elastodynamics of microstructured media are reported, including the identification of a new class of dispersive surface waves, and the presentation of methods for the experimental determination of the essential microstructural parameters. The relationships between doublet mechanics, lattice dynamics, and continuum theories are examined, leading to the identification of the subject areas in which the use of doublet mechanics is most advantageous. These areas include the analysis of domains as diverse as micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), granular and particulate media, nanotubes, and peptide arrays.

Synopsis Random Heterogeneous Materials by : Salvatore Torquato
This accessible text presents a unified approach of treating the microstructure and effective properties of heterogeneous media. Part I deals with the quantitative characterization of the microstructure of heterogeneous via theoretical methods; Part II treats a wide variety of effective properties of heterogeneous materials and how they are linked to the microstructure, accomplished by using rigorous methods.

Synopsis Mechanics of Random and Multiscale Microstructures by : Dominique Jeulin
This book reviews recent theoretical, computational and experimental developments in mechanics of random and multiscale solid materials. The aim is to provide tools for better understanding and prediction of the effects of stochastic (non-periodic) microstructures on materials’ mesoscopic and macroscopic properties. Particular topics involve a review of experimental techniques for the microstructure description, a survey of key methods of probability theory applied to the description and representation of microstructures by random modes, static and dynamic elasticity and non-linear problems in random media via variational principles, stochastic wave propagation, Monte Carlo simulation of random continuous and discrete media, fracture statistics models, and computational micromechanics.

Synopsis Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures by : R. Valid
Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures is a six-chapter book that begins by elucidating the mechanics of solid continuous media. The text then describes the finite elements method, which undoubtedly dominates the methods used for structural analysis. Subsequent chapters explain the variational principles in linear elasticity, vibration of linear structure, non-linear deformations, and the shell theory. This book will be valuable to all those who need certain theoretical developments in mechanics, including mechanical engineers, economists, and mathematicians.
