Synopsis Morphological Image Processing: Architecture and VLSI design by : P.P. Jonker

Summary Based on the experiences of past designs and the outcome of recent studies in the comparisons of low-level image processing architectures, a pipelined system for real time low-image processing has been designed and realized in CMOS technology. To minimize design pitfalls, a study was performed to the details of the design solutions that have been found in embodimentsof the three main architectural groups of image processing; the Square Processor Arrays, the Linear Processor Arrays and the Pipelines. This is reflected in a theoretical model. As the design is based on bitplane-wise processing of images, research was performed on the principles ofCellularLogic Processing of two dimensional images. of binary A methodology has been developed that is based on the transformation images using sets of Hit-or-Miss masks. This method appeared to be extendable to higher dimensional images. A theoretical model for the generation of break-point conditions in high dimensional images has been developed, and applied up to dimension three.

Synopsis V.L.S.I. Systems for High Performance Image Generation by :

As computer systems develop, processing speeds and user expectations grow. The demand for fast image rendering plays an increasingly important role in academic, industrial and commercial settings--from animated, photo-realistic images for cartoons and films, medical imaging and lighting design, to scientific visualisation for empirical data viewing, computer vision and molecular modelling. The realization of architectures for high performance, high quality image generation is achieved through the development and utilisation of suitable algorithms, advanced VLSI design techniques and novel approaches to simulation. This thesis introduces techniques for the generation and processing of data, primarily for the visualisation of 3D objects, for applications including real-time vehicle simulation graphics systems and workstation displays, and methods for increasing image realism. A behavioural simulation of the PRISM Geometry Processor is presented, for the production o f test vector data to prove the correctness of the design. This simulates the algorithms, data structures and communication techniques for a pipelined system architecture. The Geometry Processor is a VLSI design for performing many o f the operations required for the calculation and manipulation of data from 3D world coordinates, to 2D screen coordinates. The PRISM Advanced Image Display Architecture is a display processor design comprising three subsystems--the Span Generator, the Pixel Generator and the Rendering Unit. This novel architecture and a simulation strategy is described, with emphasis on the system algorithms. VLSI ASICs are used within each subsystem for high-speed span and pixel processing. In particular, the algorithms, design, operation and implementation of a novel ASIC, the Span Generator, for the generation of spans from triangle descriptions, is given. The PRISM architectures have targeted specific applications which attain high performance through the exclusion of both unnecessary functionality and general-purpose flexibility. A hardware and software architecture, which greatly expands on the experience gained from the PRISM architectures, offering the potential of large-scale parallelism for graphics and related computation is presented.

Synopsis A Course on Digital Image Processing with MATLAB by : P. K. Thiruvikraman

Concentrating on the principles and techniques of image processing, this book provides an in-depth presentation of key topics, including many techniques not included in introductory texts. Practical implementation of the various image processing algorithms is an important step in learning the subject, and computer packages such as MATLAB facilitate this without the need to learn more complex programming languages. Whilst two chapters are devoted to the MATLAB programming environment and the image processing toolbox, the use of image processing algorithms using MATLAB is emphasised throughout the book, and every chapter is accompanied by a collection of exercises and programming assignments. Including coverage of colour and video image processing as well as object recognition, the book is augmented with supplementary MATLAB code and hints and solutions to problems are also provided.
