Synopsis Advanced Textile Design (Classic Reprint) by : William Watson

Excerpt from Advanced d104ile Design The designing and colouring of cloths, which are composed of one series of warp and one series of weft threads, are exhaustively treated in the accompanying book, entitled d104ile Design and Colour, Elementary Weaves and Figured Fabrics. This book forms a continuation of the subject, and deals in an equally complete manner with compound and special cloths in which two or more series of threads are employed in one or both directions, or which are produced in special methods. There is no separate section on colour, but the principles upon which colours are applied to the various classes of cloths are described and illustrated. Synopsis Grammar of Textile Design (Classic Reprint) by : Harry Nisbet

Excerpt from Grammar of d104ile Design A textile fabric may contain only one element of woven design and yet be profusely embellished without having recourse to colour. Many white and grey linen and cotton, and also white silk, damask and brocade fabrics, are good examples of that class. The construction of such fabrics, and of damasks in particular, is frequently based upon some simple elementary weave which is simply reversed to develop the figure and ground portions, thereby causing warp to preponderate on the surface in some parts, and weft in others hence the contrasting tones of light which enable the figure and ground portions to be distinguished. The most elaborately decorated fabrics will often times be found to contain not more than three or four different varieties of simple weaves effectively introduced in the scheme of decoration; whilst most fabrics employed for domestic pur poses, and many others, contain but one element of design of a simple character and specially suited for a specific purpose. An examination of such fabrics will show that warp and weft are interwoven in some simple definite order or sequence that occurs with perfect regularity throughout the entire fabric. Synopsis Textile Design and Colour by : William Watson

Excerpt from d104ile Design and Colour: Elementary Weaves and Figured Fabrics An exhaustive treatise on the designing and colouring of textile fabrics has been found by the writer to be much beyond the scope of a single volume, and this book deals chiefly with cloths that are composed of one series of warp and one series of weft threads. The subject is continued in a second volume - entitled Advanced d104ile Design - which treats on compound and special classes of cloths. In the following pages the construction and combination of simple and special weaves, the structure of standard classes of cloths, the theories of colour, and the application of colours to textile fabrics are described and illustrated; while the designing of ordinary figured fabrics, to which eight chapters are devoted, forms a very important section of the work. d104ile calculations, and the principles and limitations of weaving machinery, so far as they concern woven design, are fully dealt with. The illustrations form a distinct feature in both number and quality, and there are 413 figures which include over 1800 different diagrams, designs, and representations of woven fabrics. The chapters on the designing of figured fabrics have previously appeared in the form of serial articles in the d104ile Recorder, while the section on colour and weave effects has similarly been published in the d104ile Manufacturer. The writer is indebted to the editors and proprietors of these journals for encouragement in the preparation of the articles. In re-issuing this matter in book form many of the original illustrations have been used, bat opportunity has been taken to carefully revise the text, and to introduce new examples. And to the matter which has been previously published eleven chapters have been added, in order to make the book a complete work on the designing and colouring of the simpler classes of cloths. To the publishers and printers the writer wishes to express his indebtedness for the regard they have had to his wishes in the preparation of the book. Synopsis Textile Design by : Thomas Woodhouse

Excerpt from Textile Design: Pure and Applied On the other hand, many cloths are produced in which the weave structure or build of the fabric is of vital importance: in which the whole effect depends upon the method of interlacing the warp and the weft in the process of weaving. Such cloths are made from yarns of every well-known kind of textile fibre. Designers of these fabrics must have an intimate knowledge of cloth structure, and should thoroughly understand how to make due allowance for the various restrictions imposed upon them by the particular type of loom in which the designs are to be developed. For such men a purely art training is not an absolute necessity, unless, indeed, when they are engaged in the preparation of the more elaborately figured kinds. Where coloured yarns are extensively used, as in the woollen, worsted, and silk industries, 3. Sound knowledge of the principles of colouring and their application to the blending of the fibres, and to the arrangement of the coloured yarns, is essential; while, for certain kinds of cloth, e.g., tapestries, brocades, etc., the designer is expected to be conversant with all branches - art, colour, weave structure, and processes of production.
