Synopsis Sermons and Addresses by : Marc Saperstein
When a respected scholar with a career at three major American universities moves to a position as principal of an important institution in UK, there is likely to be considerable interest in what he has to say not only to his students, but to many others as well. The two most important formats for such communication were the sermon and the academic lecture. Historically, the sermon has been an extremely important form of communication, first as verbal communication to a specific group of listeners, and then as a written text made available to many more readers. Marc Saperstein was a member of Beth Shalom Reform Congregation in Cambridge, where religious services were directed and sermons delivered not by the rabbi of the synagogue – which never had a rabbi – but by members of the congregation. During the five years from 2006-2011, Marc Saperstein delivered 29 sermons in Beth Shalom. He also was asked to deliver sermons at 15 other congregations. The texts of these sermons are now accessible in the book.

Synopsis Empty Admiration by : Russell St. John
"Do as I say, not as I do." It is not only parents who fail to model instructions for their children, but also teachers of preaching. Robert Lewis Dabney was a nineteenth-century Presbyterian theologian who taught theology and preaching at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia prior to and after the United States Civil War. He is remembered for his powers as a systematic theologian, his defense of southern Christianity, and his life-long racism. A formidable theologian and respected teacher of preachers, Dabney's Sacred Rhetoric (1870) poised him to influence a generation of young preachers to devote themselves to verse-by-verse expository preaching through books of the Bible. Yet Dabney failed, instead equipping his students to preach--and modeling for them--topical sermons preached on mere fragments of text, often without context. Empty Admiration traces Dabney's thought and action from his preaching theory to his classroom instruction to his personal practice, revealing a man at odds with himself, whose students--not unlike children--preached as Dabney preached, not as Dabney said.

Synopsis Claude La Colombière Sermons by : Claude La Colombière
This volume presents for the first time English-language translations of twelve sermons by St. Claude La Colombière. Canonized in 1992 by Pope John Paul II, Claude was a 17th-century Jesuit priest who authenticated the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart. Like St. Francis of Assisi, Claude had been a man of privilege, and was a literary figure with a reputation as a master of Christian eloquence. He died a martyr at the age of forty-one. Each sermon in this volume addresses a different issue under the general theme of Christian conduct. Together these sermons present the notions central to Claude's preaching and general attitude, above all the ideas of habituation and confidence in God. Preaching during Claude's lifetime developed under a variety of influences, most notably the thematic sermons of the late medieval period and the humanistic retrieval of classical letters during the Renaissance. Claude worked within and helped to create the stylistic conventions of the day by drawing on scripture and the Church Fathers in an attempt to convert his listeners. Taking a hybrid approach to his craft, he brought a balanced use of rhetorical art into the pulpit so as to please as well as to instruct and move his audience, hereby promoting the development of French classicism in the second half of the seventeenth century. In his commentary on the sermons William O'Brien examines the dynamic vision of the human person that emerges from St. Claude's preaching and considers what this might mean for readers of today. While offering a historical-literary study of his preaching, the work is located firmly in the contemporary quest for a new unity between the theoretical and the practical in Christianity. What results is a book with a unique appeal. General readers interested in their own spiritual growth, as well as scholars and students of religious history, theology, and French literature, will find this book to be a valuable resource.

Synopsis Addresses and Sermons to Students (Classic Reprint) by : David M. Steele
Excerpt from Addresses and Sermons to Students I acknowledge this indebtedness. But there is yet one other matter. I have had recourse - and frequently - to printed words of others upon allied subjects. This does not mean plagiarism. That again is not a point well taken. Every speaker, unless he is so conceited that he thinks his own ideas better always than anything that anybody else has ever said or heard or thought of, will check up his own by the pronouncements of those who have written out of more age or experience. I have done this; but I hope I have used invention of others only by absorption. I have tried to make their thoughts my own by purchase, not by theft. I know that those who first put them in words would not recognize them here. I am even fearful they would not agree with them. Synopsis The Poetry of Catullus (Classic Reprint) by : David Ansell Slater
Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one!
