Synopsis Planar Active Antennas and Quasi-optical Power Combining Arrays Using FET's and Slots by : Shigeo Kawasaki

This report presents design concepts and experimental data of planar active antenna and quasi-optical power combining arrays with strong coupling to realize a compact and low-cost radar and communication system. The prototype circuits for this purpose were made in a layered configuration using microstrip lines and in a uniplanar structure using CPW's. As an active source, an FET was selected. As a unit cell of the power combining array, a single layered active antenna using microstrip lines and slots was fabricated. In the design, small signal S-parameters were used to determine the circuit configuration while a large signal analysis to the entire circuit involving the slot antenna input impedance was carried out. The circuit designed for 10 GHz was found to operate at 9.3 GHz and the other designed for 25 GHz at 24 GHz. In addition, the circuit with CPW's and slot designed for 10 GHz was found to operate at 8.6 GHz. Based on these successful results, linear power combining arrays were made. For the strong coupling, each oscillator output is connected by a single transmission line. Several 6-element microstrip arrays and a 4-element CPW array were fabricated. In the former, sharp main beams were obtained. To obtain a millimeter-wave operating frequency, the second harmonic spatial power combining array made with FET's were demonstrated around 40 GHz. To show a topology of a 2-dimensional array, a 16-element dual polarized array at 7.8 GEL was made. To obtain the maximum in-phase radiation signal, impedance matching, a phase of the radiation signal and a signal phase of each oscillator were taken into account ... Synopsis Active and Quasi-Optical Arrays for Solid-State Power Combining by : Robert A. York

A detailed and timely overview of recent developments in active quasi-optical arrays In recent years, active quasi-optics has emerged as one of the most dynamic fields of contemporary research—a highly unconventional approach to microwave and millimeter-wave power generation that integrates solid-state devices into a single quasi-optical component in which all devices operate in unison. This book defines and describes active quasi-optical arrays, reviews the current state of the art, and answers numerous basic and technical questions on the design, analysis, and application of these devices. The contributors to this volume are leading researchers in the field who present results and views from government, industrial, and university laboratories and offer a balanced discussion on a high technical level. They also offer insight into the applicability and commercial value of this technology for military systems, manufacturing processes, communications, and consumer products. Topics presented include: Analysis and design methodologies for quasi-optical active arrays Power-added and power-combining efficiencies of quasi-optical amplifier arrays Phase-shifterless beam steering in oscillator and amplifier arrays Integrating quasi-optical active components into a compact subsystem Design and fabrication of quasi-optical oscillators, amplifiers, multipliers, and tuners Characterization and measurement of quasi-optical components

This is the only book currently available that covers this subject. The authors piece together information from diverse areas which is essential to understand integrated and integrated active antennas. Emphasis is placed on active antennas and power combining applications, consolidating the work from numerous researchers. Early chapters lay the foundation for oscillator, antenna, array and power combining theory. Chapter five discusses important testing parameters and techniques for active antenna measurements and includes definitions for equivalent isotropic radiated power, locking gain and locking bandwidth. The last chapter sheds light on beam steering, a more recent development in active antenna arrays. Contains over 200 illustrations.

Synopsis Compact Slot Array Antennas for Wireless Communications by : Alan J. Sangster

This book describes and provides design guidelines for antennas that achieve compactness by using the slot radiator as the fundamental building block within a periodic array, rather than a phased array. It provides the basic electromagnetic tools required to design and analyse these novel antennas, with sample calculations where relevant. The book presents a focused introduction and valuable insights into the relevant antenna technology, together with an overview of the main directions in the evolving technology of compact planar arrays. While the book discusses the historical evolution of compact array antennas, its main focus is on summarising the extensive body of literature on compact antennas. With regard to the now ubiquitous slot radiator, it seeks to demonstrate how, despite significant antenna size reductions that at times even seem to defy the laws of physics, desirable radiation pattern properties can be preserved. This is supported by an examination of recent advances in frequency selective surfaces and in metamaterials, which can, if handled correctly, be used to facilitate physics-defying designs. The book offers a valuable source of information for communication systems and antenna design engineers, especially thanks to its overview of trends in compact planar arrays, yet will also be of interest to students and researchers, as it provides a focused introduction and insights into this highly relevant antenna technology.

Synopsis Smart Antennas by : T. K. Sarkar

A valuable addition to the Wiley Series in Microwave and Optical Engineering Today's modern wireless mobile communications depend on adaptive "smart" antennas to provide maximum range and clarity. With the recent explosive growth of wireless applications, smart antenna technology has achieved widespread commercial and military applications. The only book available on the topic of adaptive antennas using digital technology, this text reflects the latest developments in smart antenna technology and offers timely information on fundamentals, as well as new adaptive techniques developed by the authors. Coupling electromagnetic aspects of antenna design with signal processing techniques designed to promote accurate and efficient information exchange, the text presents various mechanisms for characterizing signal-path loss associated with signal propagation, particularly for mobile wireless communications systems based on such techniques as joint space-frequency adaptive processing. In clear, accessible language, the authors: * explain the difference between adaptive antennas and adaptive signal processing * Illustrate the procedures for adaptive processing using directive elements in a conformal array * clarify multistage analysis procedure which combines electromagnetic analysis with signal processing * present a survey of the various models for characterizing radio wave propagation in urban and rural environments * describe a method wherein it is possible to identify and eliminate multipath without spatial diversity * optimize the location of base stations in a complex environment The text is an excellent resource for researchers and engineers working in electromagnetics and signal processing who deal with performance improvement of adaptive techniques, as well as those who are concerned with the characterization of propagation channels and applications of airborne phased arrays.
