Synopsis Across the San Juan Mountains (Classic Reprint) by : T. A. Rickard

Excerpt from Across the San Juan Mountains On a superb morning in September, that month of many colors, four of us1 started on a ride among the min ing districts of the San Juan, in southwestern Colorado. The starting point was Ouray, the picturesque little town named after the old chief, an Indian of renown, the friend of the white men who first explored the mountain fast nesses of the Uncompahgre. From Ouray we rode across the ranges to T'elluride, Silverton, Lake City, Gunnison, and thence to Crested Butte and back, following a course which, on the map, looks like a figure 8, with Ouray at the base of the lower loop and Crested Butte at the top. See map. The distance was slightly over 400 miles; the country traversed is beautiful to the traveler and interest ing to the mining engineer, so that the experience was sufficiently rich in incidents and information to warrant the account which it is my purpose to present. Synopsis Pioneering in the San Juan by : George M. Darley

Excerpt from Pioneering in the San Juan: Personal Reminiscences of Work Done in Southwestern Colorado During the "Great San Juan Excitement" In this age of electricity, when men think quick, live fast and die young as a general rule, reminis cences are below par. Men prefer to look forward rather than backward. And yet we believe that it is well, at times, to take a look at the past, that we may see what progress Christianity has made in Colorado. Synopsis In the Shadow of San Juan (Classic Reprint) by : Maurice McNeill Armstrong

Excerpt from In the Shadow of San Juan Nestled against the protecting walls of an adobe ruin at Capistrano I found a neglected rosebush that had long fought against adverse conditions and against unfriendly growth, so that its form was gnarled and stunted. One very small but wonderfully scented blossom was half hidden among the dust-covered leaves that matched the dusky walls behind. So similar was the plant to its surroundings that I would have stepped upon and crushed it had not a breath of perfume in the desolate waste startled me. Synopsis In the San Juan, Colorado by : J. J. Gibbons

Excerpt from In the San Juan, Colorado: Sketches In August, 1888, I received my appointment to the parish of Ouray, which included pretty nearly the whole of the San Juan country, the scene of these sketches. San Juan is the familiar designation of southwestern Colorado. Bounded on the north by rugged ranges, on the south by New Mexico, on the east by the Gunnison district and on the west by Utah's Blue mountains; it is a mountainous country, diversified by rolling uplands, smiling valleys, darkling glens and rushing streams. When, as a traveler from the east and on my way to Colorado to enter upon my duties as a priest of the diocese of Denver, the Rocky mountains burst on my vision, Pike's Peak appeared like a sentinel at the gateway of a new world. For the flat plains which mark a thousand miles' travel from the Missouri, I beheld scenes of inspiring grandeur. My fancy pictured the condition of a society where cities and towns lie in the clouds, and people live in the presence of perpetual snow and cutting frosts that penetrate the earth to a depth of six or seven feet. I had read of mines, sunk thousands of feet into the bowels of the earth, and of railroads overhanging dizzy abysses. I had not been long in this wonderland, however, when I got some inkling of the kind of life men live at this great altitude, for I experienced the pleasures of a renewed vitality and the clearness of a quickened brain. Synopsis The Eastern San Juan Mountains by : Rob Blair

A companion to The Western San Juan Mountains (originally published in 1996), The Eastern San Juan Mountains details the physical environment, biological communities, human history, and points of interest in this rich and diverse mountain system. A natural division between the eastern and western slopes of the San Juans is the north-south line that runs approximately through Lake City, south of the crossing of the Piedra River by US Highway 160. In this super guidebook, twenty-seven contributors--all experts in their fields--artfully bring the geology, hydrology, animal and plant life, human histories, and travel routes of these eastern slopes to life. Designed to inform researchers, educators, and students about the region's complex systems, The Eastern San Juan Mountains also serves as an informative guidebook to accompany visitors along their travels on the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway, which stretches between South Fork and Lake City. The Eastern San Juan Mountains deserves a place next to The Western San Juan Mountains on the bookshelf of every naturalist, researcher, resident, educator, student, and tourist seeking a greater understanding of this marvelous place and its history.
