Say, and Other Gentlemen of the Party This detachment left the camp before sunrise, and takingthemostdirectrouteacrosstheplains, arrived at eleven o'clock at the base of the mountain. Here Lieu tenant Swift found a place suited to his purpose; where, also, was a convenient spot for those who were to ascend the mountain to leave their horses. At this place was a narrow, woodless valley, dividing transversely several sandstone ridges, and extending westward to the base of the peak. 1823 account of a major government sponsored expedition to the Western lands, by steamboat down the Ohio, then up the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, intending to reach Yellowstone. The team's botanist and geologist Edwin James compiled the account from the journals of its commander Maj. Long, Thomas Say and other members of the party. The expedition produced the first scientific data on the flora and fauna of the general area of the Santa Fe Trail.
